Chapter 22 - The Child Behind the Elevator

Federal agents reached the penthouse before I did.

They found a concealed access panel behind the west elevator’s mirrored wall.

The panel required Hunter’s thumbprint and a rotating code linked to the building’s security system.

Samuel obtained an emergency warrant.

The hidden door opened at 2:17 p.m.

Behind it was a narrow hallway.

No windows.

No cameras visible.

At the end stood a furnished apartment with a small kitchen, one bedroom, and a locked interior door.

The place was clean.

Too clean.

There were children’s books arranged by color.

A purple sweater folded over a chair.

A framed photograph of me beside the bed.

Agent Morris opened the locked room.

A little girl sat beneath the windowless wall holding a stuffed rabbit.

She looked about seven.

Long red hair.

Pale skin.

Green eyes.

My eyes.

She did not cry when six adults entered.

She simply looked at me and whispered, “Mom?”

My legs nearly gave way.

I knelt several feet away.

“My name is Kylie.”

“I know.”

“Who told you I was your mother?”

“Aunt Isabelle.”

Agent Morris signaled the agents to lower their weapons.

The girl’s gaze stayed fixed on me.

“She said you were sick.”

“I’m not sick.”

“She said Dad was making you better.”

“Who did she call Dad?”

The child pointed toward the framed photograph.

Hunter stood beside me in the image.

Our wedding portrait.

My stomach turned.

“What is your name?” I asked.

“Emma Rhodes Vale.”

There was no Emma Rhodes Vale in any government record.

No birth certificate.

No school registration.

No medical file outside the Legacy network.

Dr. Crowe approached slowly.

“Emma, may I sit near you?”

Emma nodded.

While the doctor examined her, agents searched the apartment.

They found pre-recorded videos of Hunter and Isabelle.

In the recordings, Hunter told Emma that I was her biological mother.

Isabelle taught her details about my childhood.

My favorite flowers.

My father’s lake house.

Daniel’s name.

They had trained her to know me.

To love me.

To believe she belonged to me.

Samuel found a legal folder hidden beneath the floor.

The documents declared Emma my secret daughter.

The signature was forged.

Medical records claimed she had been born after my first miscarriage and hidden because of my supposed psychiatric instability.

If Hunter’s incompetency petition succeeded, he planned to introduce Emma as my biological child.

A child he could control.

A child who would strengthen his claim to the trust.

“Is she related to me?” I asked.

Agent Morris ordered an immediate DNA comparison.

Emma was frightened by the blood collection.

I held her hand.

She looked at my wedding ring.

“Aunt Isabelle said you would give that to me.”

I removed it.

The ring had become a symbol of everything false in my marriage.

But giving it to a child felt wrong.

“This ring belongs to a life that ended,” I said gently. “You deserve something that belongs to your own life.”

She did not fully understand.

She nodded anyway.

The DNA results arrived that evening.

Emma was not my daughter.

Her biological mother was Rose.

Her biological father was the real Daniel Rhodes.

Rose stared at the report for a long time.

She had never known she had a child.

Bell’s clinic had harvested her eggs during what she was told was routine treatment.

Daniel’s genetic material had been taken while he was ill.

Emma had been created to carry both Rhodes lines.

A perfect trust claimant.

Rose entered the bedroom slowly.

Emma looked at her.

They had the same red hair.

The same tilt of the chin.

Rose sat beside her.

“I’m Rose.”

Emma studied her face.

“You look like Mom.”

Rose’s eyes filled.

“So do you.”

Emma reached for her hand.

I watched them touch for the first time.

No legal document could manufacture that moment.

No trust could own it.

No man could control it.

But the danger was not over.

An agent emerged from the kitchen holding a small device.

It was wired beneath the apartment’s ventilation system.

A remote-controlled gas dispenser.

Hunter had installed it.

If Emma became a liability, someone could silence her without entering the room.

Agent Morris checked its activation history.

The device had received a signal twenty minutes earlier.

From Isabelle’s federal transport vehicle.

She had tried to kill Emma after her arrest.

👉 Emma had finally found her real mother, but Isabelle’s attempt to silence the child proved she still had an accomplice inside federal custody.
