Chapter 14 - The Name Beneath Mine

Bell held the gun.

Charles stood against the surgical table.

Daniel and Hunter remained restrained.

Margaret watched from the doorway.

I read my father’s confession while the room seemed to close around me.

“My dear Kylie, I loved you as my daughter from the first moment I held you. But love does not change biology.”

My voice cracked.

Daniel stared at me.

He had not known either.

“Your mother came to me already pregnant. The child’s biological father was a man involved in the earliest stage of the Legacy Project.”

Charles stepped forward.

Bell raised the gun.

“Stay back.”

I kept reading.

“He was brilliant, ambitious, and dangerous. Your mother feared what he would do if he learned she carried his child.”

My mother had died when I was fourteen.

I remembered her gentleness.

Her silences.

The way she sometimes stared at Charles Vale during company events.

No.

I looked at Charles.

His face revealed nothing.

Hunter saw my suspicion.

“You think my father—”

Charles cut him off.

“Be quiet.”

I read the next line.

“I agreed to raise you as my own and sealed the biological records. Only three people knew the truth: your mother, Marcus Bell, and me.”

Bell’s grip on the gun tightened.

Charles was not listed.

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know?”

“I suspected.”

“Who is my biological father?”

Bell smiled.

My hands trembled.

“If this confession has reached you, Marcus has likely returned. He will tell you I stole you from him.”

The room went silent.

Bell’s smile vanished.

I looked at him.

“No.”

He said nothing.

I read the final sentence on the page.

“Kylie, Marcus Bell is your biological father.”

The letter slipped in my fingers.

Bell watched me with a terrible hunger.

Not love.

Possession.

Every moment from the dinner rearranged itself.

He wore my father’s ring.

He knew my mother.

He knew the trust.

He had entered my home and watched me recognize him without understanding why his voice felt familiar.

“You’re lying,” I whispered.

“Arthur lied,” Bell replied.

“You falsified medical records to imprison me.”

“To activate the trust.”

“You put an embryo inside Isabelle.”

“To create leverage.”

“You threatened my brother.”

“To bring you here.”

“That isn’t what a father does.”

His expression hardened.

“I was denied my child.”

“You were denied control.”

Bell’s eyes flashed.

There it was.

The same disease.

Hunter wanted ownership.

Charles wanted ownership.

Bell wanted ownership.

Arthur had hidden the truth, but perhaps he had understood exactly what Bell was.

Daniel pulled at the ropes.

“Stay away from her.”

Bell pointed the gun toward him.

“You are not her brother.”

“He is my brother.”

“Not by blood.”

“Blood did not sit beside me after nightmares. Blood did not teach me to drive. Blood did not punch a boy who broke my heart.”

Daniel smiled through the blood on his mouth.

“He deserved it.”

I almost laughed.

Bell looked furious.

“You carry my intelligence.”

“I carry my mother’s judgment.”

He stepped closer.

“You owe your existence to me.”

“No.”

My voice became steady.

“I owe you nothing.”

Charles moved behind him.

Bell turned too late.

Charles grabbed his wrist.

The gun fired.

Margaret screamed.

The bullet struck Hunter’s chair, tearing through the wooden arm beside his ribs.

Daniel kicked Charles.

Hunter threw his weight backward.

The room erupted.

I grabbed the brass key from the envelope and ran toward the control panel beside the observation window.

The key fit.

The lock released.

Samuel rushed inside with Agent Morris and two federal officers.

“Drop the weapon!” Agent Morris shouted.

Bell and Charles froze.

Margaret stepped between the officers and Charles.

“Don’t shoot!”

Her voice broke.

Samuel reached for her.

She backed away.

Charles saw the opening and seized Margaret around the neck.

He pressed the gun beneath her jaw.

Samuel stopped.

“Let her go.”

Charles smiled.

“You spent your life protecting the Rhodes family, Samuel. Let’s see whether they protect yours.”

Margaret was crying now.

“Dad.”

Samuel looked at me.

The choice passed silently between us.

Charles wanted the exit.

If we blocked him, Margaret died.

I moved aside.

Agent Morris did the same.

Charles dragged Margaret into the hallway.

Before disappearing, he looked at me.

“The letter does not prove Bell is your father.”

I stared at him.

“Then why are you afraid of it?”

His smile returned.

“Because Arthur lied in the final line.”

He vanished down the hallway with Margaret.

Bell, now disarmed, laughed from the floor.

“He’s right.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Bell wiped blood from his mouth.

“Arthur changed the name.”

My stomach twisted.

“Whose name was there originally?”

Bell looked toward Hunter.

May you like

“Charles Vale.”

👉 Kylie had just learned Marcus Bell might be her father, but Bell’s final claim meant she could instead be Hunter’s biological sister.
