Chapter 2

PART 2:

The chapel doors opened behind them.

Two detectives walked in.

With them came Rebecca, the mother’s lawyer, holding a sealed evidence box in both hands.

Every head turned.

Detective Harris walked down the aisle without blinking.

He stopped in front of Adrian.

“Adrian Mercer,” he said, “you’re under arrest for murder.”

Adrian let go of his wife’s hair.

His face went white.

And as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, the truth he had buried with his daughters finally came back for him.

Three weeks earlier, that same mother had still been trying to leave quietly.

Not dramatically.

Not with revenge.

Not with police lights or courtroom headlines.

Quietly.

She had spent years learning how to survive inside Adrian Mercer’s house.

From the outside, he looked like the perfect husband.

He smiled at charity dinners.

He carried groceries for elderly neighbors.

He posted pictures of his daughters with captions about “family first.”

People loved him because they only met the version he performed in public.

At home, he was different.

At home, his kindness had rules.

If dinner was late, he made her feel useless.

If the girls cried, he blamed her.

If she disagreed with him, he called her unstable.

And if she ever tried to speak up, he reminded her that nobody would believe a tired mother over a respected businessman.

For years, she stayed because of the girls.

The older one loved drawing stars on every piece of paper she could find.

The younger one carried a stuffed rabbit everywhere, even to breakfast.

They were loud.

Sweet.

Messy.

Alive.

They were the only reason the house still felt like a home.

Then the mother found the messages.

Adrian had left his phone on the kitchen counter one night while he showered.

It kept lighting up.

At first, she ignored it.

Then one message appeared across the screen.

She still doesn’t know, does she?

The mother stared at it.

Then another message came in.

After the custody hearing, she’ll lose everything.

Her stomach turned.

The sender had no name saved, only a heart emoji.

But the photo attached to the contact told her enough.

The woman in the black dress.

The woman Adrian had introduced months ago as “just a business consultant.”

👉 But what she found next proved Adrian wasn’t just cheating — he was preparing to destroy her life completely…
