But Adrian made one mistake.
He believed pain would silence her.
He believed a mother with two caskets in front of her would be too broken to fight.
On the morning of the funeral, Rebecca brought the USB drive to the chapel.
The mother held it in her palm for a long time.
It felt too small to carry so much truth.
Then she tucked it behind the framed photo of her daughters, beneath the white flowers.
Not because she wanted drama.
Because she wanted them with her when she finally stopped running.
When Adrian grabbed her hair in front of everyone, a part of her almost collapsed.
For one second, she was back in that house.
Back under his voice.
Back inside the fear.
Then she saw her daughters’ picture.
Two smiling faces.
Two lives stolen.
And the fear left.
Not today.
Now Detective Harris stood in the chapel with his badge out.
Rebecca placed the sealed evidence box on the front pew.
The mistress tried to step backward.
A second detective blocked her.
Adrian shook his head violently.
“No. No, this is insane. She did this. She killed them.”
Detective Harris looked at him with disgust.
“The camera shows your vehicle at the scene before the crash.”
Adrian’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“The camera also shows the black sedan accelerating through the red light,” Harris continued. “Your mistress was driving.”
The chapel erupted.
People turned toward the woman in black.
Her cold smile was gone now.
