Chapter 1

PART 1:

“She slipped in the shower.”

Grant said it calmly.

Too calmly.

The emergency room was bright, cold, and silent except for the beeping monitor beside his wife’s bed.

She lay beneath a thin white blanket, one eye swollen, her lip split, her breathing shallow.

Purple bruises wrapped around both arms like fingerprints that had refused to disappear.

Grant stood beside her with his sleeves rolled up and his face arranged into the perfect mask of concern.

He looked like a frightened husband.

He sounded like one too.

“She’s clumsy when she’s tired,” he added, glancing at the doctor. “She gets dizzy sometimes. I told her to sit down, but she never listens.”

Dr. Reed did not answer right away.

His eyes moved from the wife’s cheek to her wrists.

Then to the deep marks along her upper arm.

The kind of marks no shower floor could leave.

A nurse standing nearby looked down and went still.

Under the blanket, Grant’s hand tightened around his wife’s fingers.

Hard.

A warning.

A threat.

His thumb pressed into the bruise he had already left there hours earlier.

She flinched.

Grant leaned closer, still smiling for the medical staff.

Then his voice dropped low enough that only she could hear.

“Say one word,” he whispered, “and you lose everything.”

Her eyes opened slowly.

Pain clouded them.

Fear lived there too.

But beneath both was something Grant had not seen before.

A decision.

She turned her head just enough to look at him.

Her voice came out barely louder than a breath.

“I already did.”

Grant froze.

For the first time since they had entered the hospital, his perfect husband act cracked.

“What?”

She did not repeat herself.

She looked down at her wrist.

Dr. Reed followed her gaze.

The bruise was shaped like a hand.

A clear grip.

Four fingers on one side.

A thumb on the other.

Then she looked toward Grant’s coat hanging open over the chair.

His phone sat half-exposed in the inside pocket.

The lock screen lit up.

A small cloud icon appeared.

Backup complete.

Her eyes moved back to Dr. Reed.

“Check the cloud,” she whispered.

👉 But when the doctor understood what she meant, Grant’s perfect husband mask began to fall apart…
