Chapter 6

PART 6:

At the ER, Grant tried to control the room the way he controlled everything else.

He answered questions before she could.

He stood too close.

He kept touching her.

When the nurse asked if she felt safe at home, Grant laughed softly and said, “Of course she does. She’s just embarrassed.”

The nurse did not laugh back.

Dr. Reed came in a few minutes later.

He had seen enough injuries in enough emergency rooms to recognize when a story was wrong.

Falls had patterns.

Fear had patterns too.

The wife barely spoke, but her body did.

The way she looked at Grant before answering.

The way she stopped breathing when he moved.

The way she flinched from his hand but not from the doctor’s.

Dr. Reed asked Grant to step outside.

Grant refused politely.

“She needs me.”

The wife closed her eyes.

Grant squeezed her fingers under the blanket.

That was when he said it.

“She slipped in the shower.”

And that was when she decided she would not let him write her ending.

Not this time.

“I already did,” she whispered.

“Check the cloud.”

Dr. Reed understood enough to act.

He sent the nurse out under the excuse of getting more supplies.

She returned with security.

Another staff member called hospital police first, then city police.

While Grant was busy trying to explain why his wife was “confused,” Dr. Reed asked her one question.

“Is there evidence?”

She nodded once.

“On his phone.”

“Password?”

She closed her eyes, exhausted.

Then she whispered the numbers.

Their anniversary.

Grant had always been sentimental about the dates he used to control her.

👉 But when the officers opened Grant’s phone, they found more than one video waiting in the cloud…
