Chapter 15 - Page One

Seven days after Julian threw me into the rain, he and Beatrice returned to Briarcrest under federal escort.
They were allowed to collect limited personal property before detention.
Julian carried luxury shopping bags from a hotel boutique.
Even under investigation, he had been spending from an account he thought authorities had not found.
Beatrice carried one leather case.
They walked toward the mansion door.
Julian inserted his key.
It did not turn.
He tried again.
Then again.
“Why can’t we open our own door?”
The front door opened slowly.
I stood inside wearing a clean pink maternity dress.
My mother stood behind me.
Naomi and two federal agents waited in the foyer.
I held a thick document folder.
Julian stared at me.
Beatrice stared at Anne.
For once, neither had words.
I handed Julian the folder.
“Open it.”
He looked down.
“Let’s see if your smile survives page one.”
Page one declared our marriage void.
Page two removed Julian from all Mercer trusts.
Page three froze every account connected to Vale Meridian fraud.
Page four restored the mansion and company to me.
Page five listed criminal charges.
Julian’s hands began shaking.
Beatrice snatched the folder.
She flipped through the pages.
The farther she read, the paler she became.
“You cannot prove conspiracy.”
My mother stepped forward.
“I can.”
Beatrice’s eyes narrowed.
“You were drugged for decades.”
“And I learned to remember everything.”
Anne described the code system Beatrice used.
Transfers labeled flowers.
Bribes labeled repairs.
Medical attacks labeled resolutions.
The red ledger recovered from the mansion matched Anne’s memory exactly.
Federal agents opened the leather case Beatrice brought.
Inside were cash, passports, and a private-jet itinerary.
She planned to flee that night.
The destination was Switzerland.
Julian turned toward her.
“You said we were going to fight.”
“I said what kept you useful.”
The same cruelty he had shown me now landed on him.
He looked shattered.
Not because of guilt.
Because he had finally become disposable.
Agents handcuffed Beatrice.
Julian remained under separate arrest.
As they led him away, he looked back at the foyer.
The marble floor.
The chandelier.
The home he believed proved his success.
“You can’t erase me,” he said.
I touched the doorframe.
“I don’t need to erase you.”
I looked at the folder in his hands.
“You documented yourself.”
Outside, reporters waited beyond the gates.
The same luxury bags Julian carried fell onto the driveway as agents placed him in the vehicle.
Rain began again.
He looked at me through the glass.
I closed the door.
Not in anger.
In peace.
But the criminal case had only begun.
And the red ledger contained one final name that none of us expected.
Rebecca Sloan.
The pregnant woman whose death Beatrice had marked completed.
Naomi stared at the entry.
“That was my sister.”
May you like
She had never known Rebecca existed.
👉 Claire reclaimed her home, but Naomi’s connection to another dead pregnant woman revealed one final victim whose case could bring the entire conspiracy down.
