Chapter 5 - The Room Beneath the Cellar

Naomi wanted me to wait for police.
I did.
But waiting outside the wine cellar while someone moved beneath my home felt impossible.
Two officers arrived with the sheriff.
The cellar appeared ordinary.
Wine racks.
Stone walls.
A locked cabinet.
Then one officer noticed scratches along the floor beneath the last rack.
The rack moved.
Behind it was a narrow metal door.
The hidden passage descended beneath the mansion.
I had lived there six years.
I never knew it existed.
The officers entered first.
Naomi stayed beside me.
At the bottom, we found a small room with no windows.
A cot.
A sink.
Medical supplies.
A camera mounted in one corner.
The room smelled of bleach.
Someone had been living there recently.
On the cot lay a baby blanket.
My heart began pounding.
“Vanessa,” I whispered.
A weak sound came from behind a second door.
The officer opened it.
Vanessa Cole sat on the floor holding an infant against her chest.
She looked pale and painfully thin.
Her eyes widened when she saw me.
“Claire?”
I knelt carefully.
“You’re safe.”
She laughed once.
A broken sound.
“No one is safe from them.”
Her son was asleep beneath a gray blanket.
A bruise marked Vanessa’s jaw.
She told us Julian had moved her into the hidden room after she threatened to expose the affair.
Beatrice controlled the food, medication, and cameras.
They promised to release her after I signed away the mansion.
“Why keep you here?” Naomi asked.
“Because Julian needed the baby hidden until Claire’s child was born.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
Vanessa kissed her son’s head.
“Beatrice wanted one legitimate heir.”
The plan unfolded slowly.
If I surrendered the mansion and company shares, Julian would divorce me, deny my child, and quietly present Vanessa’s son as his legal heir through a later marriage or adoption arrangement.
If I refused, Beatrice would use the forged DNA report to destroy me and force both children into legal disputes she controlled.
Vanessa looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I thought he loved me.”
“So did I.”
She reached beneath the mattress and removed a small phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Before she could unlock it, the hidden room’s lights went out.
The security alarm sounded upstairs.
Then smoke began entering through the ceiling vent.
Naomi grabbed the baby.
An officer lifted Vanessa.
We rushed toward the staircase.
The metal door above us slammed shut.
Locked.
Smoke thickened.
My phone rang.
Julian.
I answered.
“You should have stayed in the rain,” he said.
“You knew Vanessa was here.”
“You were never supposed to find her.”
“You’re trying to kill your own son.”
Silence.
Then Beatrice spoke beside him.
“Some bloodlines are worth preserving. Others are not.”
The call ended.
One officer fired at the lock.
The bullet ricocheted.
Naomi searched the walls.
I looked at the camera.
The red light was still on.
They were watching.
Then Vanessa pointed toward the sink.
“Behind the pipe. Julian used it once.”
We tore away a metal panel.
A narrow maintenance shaft opened behind it.
The officer pushed Vanessa and the baby through first.
Naomi followed.
I entered last as flames appeared near the cot.
We crawled through darkness while the room burned behind us.
The shaft opened into the garden.
Firefighters arrived minutes later.
The hidden room was destroyed.
But Vanessa’s phone remained in her hand.

And the final recording on it began with Beatrice saying my unborn baby’s name.
👉 Vanessa escaped with her child, but the recording proved Beatrice had targeted Claire’s baby personally—and knew something about the pregnancy Claire had never told anyone.
