Chapter 1 - The Daughter He Humiliated

“I’m proud of my sons.”

Franklin Camden lifted his beer bottle toward Colton and Derek as though making a toast.

Both men grinned.

Maris stood at the far end of the backyard table in a sharply tailored navy suit, one hand pressed beside an open black legal folder.

The Father’s Day lunch spread between them looked untouched.

Burgers.

Salad.

Mustard and ketchup bottles.

Glasses sweating beneath the bright Idaho sun.

Behind Franklin, Elaine held a glass salad bowl so tightly that the serving spoon trembled against its rim.

Franklin lowered his bottle and pointed two fingers at Maris.

“But you?”

His eyes traveled slowly over her suit, heels, and controlled expression.

“You’re a disgrace.”

Colton laughed.

Derek leaned forward, eager to see whether Maris would cry.

Elaine looked down.

No one defended her.

Maris’s jaw tightened once.

Then she removed a black envelope from beneath her arm.

“Happy Father’s Day.”

She planted one heel against the weathered deck and drove the envelope across the table with a single hard push.

It slid between the plates.

Struck Franklin’s beer bottle.

The glass knocked sharply against the wood.

Every smile vanished.

Franklin caught the envelope before it fell.

Maris placed one luxury car key beside his plate.

Click.

Then she opened the black folder.

A signed legal page appeared beneath her palm.

Colton reached toward it.

Maris slammed her hand down, stopping him inches away.

“Don’t touch what you never paid for.”

Franklin tore open the envelope and unfolded the document.

His eyes moved rapidly down the first page.

His breathing stopped.

Derek tried to lean closer.

Franklin pulled the paper against his chest.

Elaine slowly set the salad bowl down.

Recognition spread across her face.

“Where did you get this?” Franklin demanded.

Maris turned the final page toward him.

She tapped one signature line with a silver pen.

His signature.

A bold property seal.

Franklin looked toward the beige house behind him.

Then toward the black Jaguar parked beyond the deck.

For the first time that afternoon, he looked afraid.

Maris placed her phone beside the document.

A paused recording screen glowed beneath the sunlight.

Then she gave him a cold, almost invisible smile.

👉 Franklin had spent twenty years telling Maris she owned nothing—but his own signature was about to prove that he had already given her control.
