Chapter 12 - The Signature Elaine Never Gave
The financial audit began the following Monday.
Maris did not return to the family home.
Daniel’s team worked from certified records.
Within two days, they found three loan documents bearing Elaine’s signature.
Elaine denied signing any of them.
One pledged her retirement account.
Another guaranteed Colton’s failed development.
The third authorized the home to secure Derek’s equipment loan.
Franklin had forged his wife’s name too.
Elaine sat in Maris’s office staring at the copies.
“I thought the retirement money was still there.”
“It isn’t.”
“How much is left?”
Maris told her.
Elaine closed her eyes.
Less than one-third remained.
Franklin had spent the rest keeping Camden Development alive.
He never told her.
He continued buying vehicles, sponsoring events, and hosting family reunions while Elaine’s retirement disappeared.
“I knew he lied,” Elaine whispered. “I didn’t know it was this much.”
Maris felt anger rise.
“You knew enough to be afraid.”
“Yes.”
“You taught me to stay quiet.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him humiliate me.”
Elaine began crying.
“Yes.”
Maris did not comfort her immediately.
For once, Elaine had to sit with the damage.
After several minutes, she looked up.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“That is the first honest thing you’ve said without being forced.”
Elaine nodded.
“What happens now?”
“You get independent legal counsel.”
“I can’t afford it.”
“I will arrange it.”
Elaine looked ashamed.
“After everything?”
“I am protecting you because it is right. Not because you earned access to me.”
The distinction mattered.
Maris helped Elaine file a sworn statement denying the signatures.
The lenders opened fraud investigations.
Colton voluntarily surrendered company records.
Derek did the same.
Both brothers were terrified of losing their businesses.
But for the first time, they stopped blaming Maris.
Colton called her one evening.
“I owe you an apology.”
“Yes.”
He seemed surprised by the direct answer.
“I laughed when Dad called you a disgrace.”
“Yes.”
“I believed him because it benefited me.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t know how to fix that.”
“You start by telling the truth when it costs you.”
Colton agreed to provide evidence of Franklin’s financial instructions.
Derek followed.
Franklin called them traitors.
He fired both sons from Camden Development.
Then he discovered he no longer had the authority to do so.
Maris had already suspended him from management pending investigation.
