Chapter 11 - The Provision Franklin Never Read
Daniel opened the agreement to section nine.
Franklin had initialed the bottom of the page.
He claimed he had never read it.
Daniel did not hide his disbelief.
The provision stated that if Franklin concealed debt, forged the beneficiary’s authorization, or placed protected assets at legal risk, control transferred immediately to Maris.
No court order was required to activate the change.
Only documented evidence.
The blue ledger provided evidence.
The forged guarantees provided evidence.
Franklin’s recorded admissions provided more.
Maris placed her phone on the table.
Franklin stared at it.
“You planned this ambush.”
“No. I planned to ask one question.”
“What question?”
“Would you tell the truth if the whole family was listening?”
Franklin laughed bitterly.
“And now you think you run everything?”
Daniel answered.
“Legally, she has immediate authority over the holding company’s assets.”
Colton looked toward the house.
“Can she sell it?”
Daniel paused.
“That depends on the full review.”
Franklin gripped the table.
“You boys hear this? She wants to take your mother’s home.”
Maris looked at Elaine.
Her mother’s face showed fear, but not accusation.
Elaine finally spoke.
“This is not her fault.”
Franklin turned toward her.
“Whose side are you on?”
“The side I should have chosen twelve years ago.”
Franklin stood.
Elaine did not retreat.
“You took her inheritance.”
“I saved this family.”
“You saved your name.”
“I gave all of you this life.”
Elaine’s voice cracked.
“No. Maris did.”
Silence spread across the deck.
The sentence Franklin refused to say had come from Elaine instead.
Maris felt tears gather.
This time, she allowed one to fall.
Franklin noticed and smiled cruelly.
“There she is. Still the wounded little girl.”
Maris wiped the tear away.
“No. The wounded girl kept begging you to love her.”
She closed the black folder.
“The woman standing here no longer needs you to.”
Franklin’s smile disappeared.
Daniel handed Maris a temporary management authorization.
She signed it.
With one stroke of the silver pen, Franklin lost authority to pledge, refinance, transfer, or sell the protected assets.
His phone began ringing.
The company’s bank.
Maris did not need to hear the conversation to know what had happened.
Daniel had already sent the notice.
Franklin looked at the screen.
Then at her.
“You froze my accounts.”
“Only the accounts connected to assets you were never allowed to use.”
Colton stood.
“How bad is this?”
Maris looked at both brothers.
