Chapter 10 - What the Signature Activated

Walter’s attorney arrived twenty minutes later.
Maris had asked him to wait in a car nearby.
His name was Daniel Price.
He carried a slim briefcase and a certified copy of the holding-company agreement.
Franklin stared at him.
“You have no right to be here.”
Daniel looked at Maris.
“Does the property’s controlling beneficiary authorize my presence?”
“Yes,” she said.
The words landed heavily.
Franklin laughed.
“This is still my home.”
Daniel placed the certified agreement on the table.
“Under the original contract, Mr. Camden retained occupancy and management rights only while the repayment terms remained current.”
“I repaid her.”
“Then provide evidence.”
Franklin pointed toward the house.
“She lived here. She ate here. We paid for college.”
Daniel remained calm.
“Ordinary parental expenses are not recognized as repayment of a secured business obligation.”
Colton looked at the signature page.
“What happens when the deadline passes?”
Daniel turned to Maris.
“She receives controlling authority over the holding company.”
“And what does it own?” Derek asked.
Daniel did not answer directly.
“The assets listed in the schedule.”
Franklin stepped forward.
“You will not read that schedule.”
Maris closed the folder.
“I don’t need to read it aloud.”
Franklin’s anger became panic.
He looked toward the house.
Then the Jaguar.
Exactly as Maris had expected.
Colton saw the reaction.
“It’s both, isn’t it?”
Franklin remained silent.
Derek pushed his chair back.
“The house and the car?”
Daniel spoke carefully.
“The original agreement transferred legal interest in designated collateral. Subsequent unauthorized liens do not erase that transfer.”
Elaine covered her mouth.
She had understood the arrangement, but perhaps not the consequence.
Franklin turned to Maris.
“You would throw your own parents out?”
“I have not said what I will do.”
“You brought a lawyer to Father’s Day.”
“I brought proof to the place where you planned to humiliate me.”
Colton looked at Maris.
“What about our businesses?”
“The audit will determine whether company debts were illegally attached to protected assets.”
Derek’s face tightened.
“And if they were?”
“Then the lenders may pursue the people who signed the applications.”
Every gaze shifted toward Franklin.
He sat slowly.
For the first time, he looked older than sixty-two.
Maris placed the silver pen beside the signature page.
“You asked what I want.”
Franklin stared at her.
“I want you to say, in front of everyone, whose money saved this family.”
His jaw hardened.
“No.”
Maris picked up the Jaguar key.

“Then we move to the next provision.”
👉 Franklin refused to admit the truth—but the next provision allowed Maris to remove him from financial control before sunset.
