Chapter 1 - The Photograph in His Wallet

“You stole everything!”

Mason Bennett’s hand closed around Claire’s military bun.

He yanked hard.

The sudden force pulled Lieutenant Colonel Claire Bennett off balance and drove her down onto one knee on the marble courthouse steps.

Legal documents burst from the brown folder in her arms.

White pages scattered beneath the feet of reporters.

Camera flashes exploded around them.

But Claire did not release the folder.

Her jaw clenched.

Her polished Army uniform remained rigid across her shoulders as she twisted toward Mason, caught his wrist, and forced his hand away with one controlled movement.

Mason stumbled half a step.

He had expected panic.

He had expected tears.

Instead, Claire rose slowly, her eyes burning with restrained fury.

A courthouse bailiff rushed between them.

“Step back, sir.”

Mason barely heard him.

He was too busy staring at Claire with the same hatred he had carried into every divorce hearing.

“You think that uniform makes you untouchable?”

Claire said nothing.

A few feet away, Mason’s attorney bent to retrieve his fallen black briefcase.

Jonathan Hale was nearly seventy, silver-haired, famous in Washington legal circles, and almost impossible to intimidate.

He had entered the courthouse confident that Mason would win.

Then he looked directly into Claire’s face.

His body stopped.

The briefcase slipped from his fingers again.

His lips parted.

The color drained from his skin.

Claire noticed.

So did Mason.

Jonathan whispered, barely breathing, “It’s really you?”

Mason spun toward him.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Jonathan did not answer.

His shaking hand reached inside his jacket and pulled an old photograph from his wallet.

The image was faded.

A young woman stood beside an Army helicopter, holding a dark-haired little girl against her chest.

Claire recognized the woman immediately.

Her mother.

Jonathan stepped between Claire and Mason.

“Don’t touch her again.”

Mason stared at his own attorney.

Reporters pushed closer.

Jonathan looked from the photograph to Claire’s face as if twenty-eight years had collapsed in a single second.

Then Claire saw the man standing behind her mother in the picture.

It was Jonathan.
