Chapter 9 - Mason’s Final Threat
Mason was released pending an assault hearing.
The courthouse ordered him to stay away from Claire.
He responded by contacting a tabloid reporter.
He offered photographs of the trust letter, details about Jonathan’s affair, and claims that Claire had concealed millions during the marriage.
His price was high.
But money was not his only goal.
He wanted to humiliate Claire.
He wanted her military superiors to question her judgment.
He wanted Jonathan destroyed for abandoning him.
Rachel learned of the offer through a reporter who requested comment.
Claire listened without visible reaction.
“What does he have?”
“Photographs of the letter and partial trust records.”
“Anything classified?”
“No.”
“Anything proving the money is marital property?”
“No.”
“Then let him publish.”
Rachel studied her.
“It will expose your father.”
“He exposed himself.”
“It may become national news.”
Claire looked at her ribbons hanging inside the garment bag near her office.
She had survived roadside attacks.
Emergency landings.
The deaths of soldiers she could not save.
She would not allow Mason’s hunger for spectacle to dictate her choices.
“Release the truth first,” she said.
Rachel arranged a formal statement.
Claire disclosed that a previously unknown family trust had been created for her as a child.
She confirmed the trust was separate property.
She acknowledged Jonathan Hale’s biological relationship but emphasized that the matter was under legal review.
She also stated that evidence connected to her mother’s death had been forwarded to federal investigators.
The statement changed the story.
Mason was no longer the man revealing a military officer’s secret.
He became the abusive spouse attempting to profit from stolen private documents.
The tabloid withdrew its offer.
Mason called Claire from an unlisted number.
“You think you won?”
“You are violating the protective order.”
“I made you.”
Claire nearly smiled.
“No. You found me already built and spent years trying to make me smaller.”
“You’ll lose your career when people learn you lied.”
“I did not know.”
“They won’t believe that.”
“The evidence will.”
Mason’s breathing grew harsh.
“You belong to me.”
Claire recorded the words.
“No,” she said. “I never did.”
She ended the call.
Minutes later, Mason sent a photograph.
It showed a safe inside their former home.
The door stood open.
The brown folder Claire thought she had recovered was only one copy.
Inside the safe were original documents from her grandmother’s storage unit.
Including a handwritten letter from Rebecca.
Mason wrote one message beneath the image.
