Chapter 8 - The Missing Page from Rebecca’s Report
The original accident file contained twelve pages.
The official military copy contained eleven.
The missing page documented a witness statement.
A driver had seen a black sedan force Rebecca’s vehicle off the road.
The sedan belonged to Sentinel Aeronautics.
The same contractor Rebecca had accused of falsifying safety inspections.
Jonathan obtained the page from a private investigator two days after Rebecca’s death.
He confronted Sentinel’s chief executive.
The executive claimed the car had been stolen.
Then he reminded Jonathan of the confidential settlement covering the original equipment case.
If Jonathan revealed the documents, he could face disbarment for breaching privilege and possible criminal scrutiny for helping suppress evidence.
Jonathan backed down.
He placed the original accident report in private storage.
Six weeks later, he created the trust for Claire.
Rachel examined the documents.
“This could support reopening the investigation.”
Claire stared at Jonathan.
“You had this while my grandmother begged for answers.”
“Yes.”
“You watched her die believing no one cared.”
“Yes.”
“You represented Mason to stop me from finding out.”
Jonathan’s face tightened.
“I believed I could protect the trust without revealing Rebecca’s history.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
“At first.”
“And later?”
Jonathan looked toward the courthouse window.
“When I saw Mason’s behavior, I understood what I had done.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You needed to see him pull my hair in public?”
“I needed to stop lying to myself.”
“That does not make you brave.”
“No.”
Jonathan’s honesty only made her angrier.
Mason had weaponized Jonathan’s secret.
Jonathan had weaponized the law to keep that secret buried.
Both men believed they had the right to control Claire’s knowledge of her own life.
Rachel asked how Mason obtained the trust information.
Jonathan explained the letter from Rebecca’s storage box.
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“Mason opened a letter addressed to me.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew?”
“Not until he showed me.”
“Yet you represented him.”
Jonathan nodded.
Claire walked toward the window.
Below, reporters still crowded the courthouse steps.
Her assault had already become public.
Soon her parentage might become public too.
She had spent her career controlling information, protecting soldiers, and preparing for danger.
But the greatest deceptions in her life had been carried out by men who claimed they were protecting her.
Rachel touched her shoulder.
“You control what happens next.”
Claire looked at the original report.
“No.”
She picked it up.
“For twenty-eight years, they controlled what happened next.”
