Chapter 4 - Mason’s Secret Meeting
Mason had not discovered the trust through a bank.
He found it inside Claire’s grandmother’s old storage unit.
After the funeral five years earlier, Claire asked Mason to help sort the remaining boxes.
He complained about the dust and left after twenty minutes.
At least, that was what Claire believed.
In reality, Mason returned alone.
He found a sealed envelope beneath a false bottom in Rebecca’s wooden jewelry case.
The envelope was addressed to Claire.
Mason opened it.
Inside was a trust reference number and a letter from Jonathan Hale.
Mason never showed Claire.
He photographed every page.
Then he placed the envelope back inside the box.
For five years, he researched the trust quietly.
Most records were sealed.
But six months before filing for divorce, he contacted Jonathan.
Their first meeting took place at a private club in Washington.
Jonathan was immediately guarded.
“How did you obtain this number?”
“My wife inherited it.”
“That does not answer my question.”
Mason placed a copy of the letter on the table.
Jonathan’s face tightened when he saw Rebecca’s name.
“She doesn’t know, does she?” Mason asked.
Jonathan did not respond.
Mason smiled.
“You created the trust.”
“I administered it.”
“For your client?”
“Yes.”
“Who was the client?”
“That information is privileged.”
“Was Claire your client’s daughter?”
Jonathan’s eyes hardened.
“You should leave.”
Mason leaned closer.
“My wife is a soldier. She spends more time overseas than at home. We’re divorcing.”
“That is irrelevant.”
“Not if the money becomes marital property.”
“It does not.”
“Everything has a price.”
Jonathan stood.
Mason followed him toward the door.
“I can expose the relationship publicly.”
Jonathan stopped.
Mason had no proof of a relationship.
Only a suspicion.
But Jonathan’s reaction confirmed enough.
“What do you want?” Jonathan asked.
Mason answered without hesitation.
“Representation.”
Jonathan should have refused.
Instead, he agreed.
Not because he believed Mason deserved the trust.
Because he wanted control over what Mason might reveal.
He convinced himself he could manage the case, protect the sealed history, and prevent Claire from learning the truth.
But every filing pulled Claire closer.
Mason interpreted Jonathan’s fear as weakness.
He began demanding more.
The house.
The investments.
Claire’s pension.
And half the trust.
Jonathan repeatedly told him the trust could not be divided.
Mason refused to listen.
“She’s my wife. I own half her life.”
That sentence changed Jonathan’s expression.
But he still did not withdraw.
