Chapter 6 - CALEB’S NAME

Caleb handed investigators everything.

Phones.

Laptops.

Email archives.

Financial access logs.

He did not ask for immunity.

He did not ask June to defend him.

That mattered.

It did not erase anything.

But it mattered.

Forensic accountants discovered that several Crestline transactions contained Caleb’s digital approval.

The problem?

Caleb had been in Europe for three of them.

One approval occurred while he was giving a speech in London.

Another while his phone was in airplane mode over the Atlantic.

Somebody had his credentials.

Meredith had helped set up the Carter family’s financial authentication system after Lillian died.

Caleb had trusted her because she had a finance degree and understood the estate.

June sat across from him during a meeting with Detective Hayes.

“You gave her access?”

“Temporary access.”

“When?”

“After Mom died.”

“For how long?”

“I thought six weeks.”

The records showed Meredith retained administrator permissions for nineteen months.

Caleb looked physically sick.

Detective Hayes asked:

“Who was supposed to remove them?”

Caleb answered:

“Me.”

June looked away.

The pattern was becoming unbearable.

Meredith acted.

Caleb assumed.

Meredith warned.

Caleb believed.

Meredith gained access.

Caleb forgot to revoke it.

And June paid for his carelessness with a bruised face and a broken crib.

The financial trail grew.

Crestline Advisory had received $3.8 million.

From there, money moved into property purchases and investment accounts.

One account belonged to Meredith.

Another belonged to a man named Owen Pike.

June had never heard the name.

Caleb had.

He went pale.

“Owen was Meredith’s fiancé.”

“Was?”

“They broke up three years ago.”

Detective Hayes checked.

“They didn’t.”

Travel records.

Shared hotel reservations.

A jointly owned condo.

Private messages.

Meredith and Owen had pretended to separate.

Why?

Because Owen worked for the trust company managing the Carter assets.

June stared at Caleb.

“This keeps getting worse.”

“Yes.”

Owen had access to internal trust reports.

Meredith had Caleb’s old credentials.

Together, they could move money and alter records long enough to delay detection.

But June’s automatic oversight rights after Elara’s birth created a problem.

The upcoming accounting would expose inconsistencies.

Detective Hayes said:

“So Meredith needed June discredited before she reviewed it.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“And I helped her.”

June snapped:

“Stop saying that like you were her victim in the nursery.”

He looked at her.

“You weren’t.”

“I know.”

“You were manipulated before you walked in.”

June’s voice trembled.

“But when you entered that room, your fist belonged to you.”

Caleb nodded.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No argument.

Just yes.

Detective Hayes looked between them, then slid another document across the table.

Investigators had recovered it from Owen Pike’s work computer.

A draft petition.

EMERGENCY TEMPORARY CUSTODY OF ELARA CARTER.

Petitioner:

Meredith Carter.

Supporting witness:

Caleb Carter.

Caleb stared at his own name.

“I never agreed to this.”

June felt cold.

Hayes turned to the second page.

Attached was a declaration.

Purportedly signed by Caleb.

Claiming June had become increasingly unstable and dangerous.

Caleb whispered:

“That isn’t my signature.”

The signature looked perfect.

👉 Meredith wasn’t only stealing Caleb’s money and framing June—she had already prepared to use Caleb’s identity to take Elara too.
