Chapter 19 - BACK IN THE NURSERY

The crib had been replaced months earlier.

June had chosen the new one herself.

White oak.

Stronger railing.

Elara was almost two now.

She had outgrown pale yellow onesies and had developed strong opinions about socks.

The security camera remained on the ceiling.

Caleb once offered to remove it.

June said no.

“It didn’t betray me.”

He never asked again.

Now they stood together in the nursery.

Elara played on the rug.

Caleb waited.

June looked around.

“I used to dream about this room.”

His face tightened.

“Bad dreams?”

“At first.”

She touched the crib.

“Then I stopped dreaming about Meredith.”

Caleb said nothing.

“I dreamed about you.”

He looked down.

“You opening the door.”

The shame on his face was immediate.

June continued.

“I kept trying to change what happened.”

“In the dream?”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes you asked what was happening.”

“Sometimes you went to Elara first.”

“Sometimes you watched the camera.”

Her voice cracked.

“But I always woke up before you hit me.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

For the first time, June answered the apology without anger.

That startled both of them.

She sat beside Elara.

“I don’t want my life defined by the worst fifteen seconds we ever had.”

Caleb looked at her carefully.

“But I also won’t pretend they didn’t happen.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“I need something from you.”

“Anything.”

“No.”

June almost smiled.

“Don’t say anything.”

Caleb corrected himself.

“What do you need?”

“I need you to understand that if you ever scare me like that again, there won’t be another counseling session.”

He nodded.

“There won’t be another chance.”

“I understand.”

“And Meredith being gone doesn’t fix you.”

“I know.”

“You keep doing the work.”

“Yes.”

June watched Elara stack blocks.

Then she reached into her bag.

Their wedding ring.

She had removed it at the hospital.

Caleb stared.

June did not put it on.

Instead she placed it on the dresser.

“I’m not ready to wear it.”

“Okay.”

“But I’m not ready to throw it away either.”

Caleb breathed slowly.

“Okay.”

“That’s where we are.”

He nodded.

“That’s enough.”

June finally looked at him.

Maybe that was why she believed change was possible.

The old Caleb would have tried to turn hope into certainty.

This Caleb allowed uncertainty to remain.

Elara stood up.

She waddled between them.

“Mommy.”

June lifted her.

“Daddy.”

Caleb smiled.

“I’m here.”

Elara grabbed both their hands.

June looked at Caleb.

No promises.

No dramatic reunion.

Just three people in a room learning a different way to be a family.

Over the following months, trust returned in tiny pieces.

A key returned.

A shared dinner.

A family walk.

Then one evening, June picked up the ring.

She did not tell Caleb.

Not yet.

Because if she wore it again, it would not mean the old marriage had survived.

May you like

It would mean they had built a new one.

👉 One year after Meredith tried to destroy them, June finally knew whether Caleb had earned the right to call her his wife again.
