Chapter 8 - THE PART CALEB COULDN’T BLAME ON HER

Caleb left the interview and vomited in the courthouse restroom.

Later, he sat alone on the steps outside.

June saw him through the window.

She felt nothing resembling satisfaction.

She had loved him for eight years.

Seeing him destroyed did not heal her.

It only made the damage feel larger.

Caleb eventually asked to speak with her attorney present.

June agreed.

He did not apologize first.

That surprised her.

Instead he said:

“I need to tell you something I should have told you years ago.”

June waited.

“My father had a temper.”

She looked at him.

“So?”

“I promised myself I wouldn’t.”

June’s face hardened.

“Don’t turn this into your childhood.”

“I’m not.”

Good.

Caleb continued.

“I’m telling you because I’ve spent my whole life thinking that because I never hit anyone, I had beaten it.”

His eyes were red.

“But the first moment I believed Elara was in danger, I didn’t ask. I didn’t think. I attacked.”

June said nothing.

“That was me.”

Finally.

Not Meredith.

Not confusion.

Not panic.

Him.

“I’m starting counseling,” Caleb said. “And the anger program my lawyer recommended.”

“Your lawyer recommended?”

“I requested one before court ordered it.”

June looked at him carefully.

“I’m not coming home.”

“I know.”

“I don’t know if I’ll ever come home.”

His throat moved.

“I know.”

“You won’t pressure me.”

“No.”

“You won’t use Elara to get close to me.”

“No.”

“You’ll follow whatever custody arrangement the court says.”

“Yes.”

June studied him.

This was the first conversation since the nursery where she did not feel like Caleb was trying to repair the outcome.

He was finally looking at the cause.

When she stood to leave, he said:

“June.”

She stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

She closed her eyes.

Not because she accepted it.

Because she believed he meant it.

Those were different things.

Meanwhile, Meredith refused to cooperate.

Her attorney claimed the liquid had been intended for Meredith herself.

That she had never planned to administer it.

That June overreacted.

Then investigators showed Meredith the recovered audio.

Her expression changed.

Owen was arrested the same afternoon.

Financial conspiracy.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Evidence manipulation.

He immediately asked for a lawyer.

Three days later, he asked for a deal.

Meredith learned about it in jail.

“She knows Owen is talking,” Detective Hayes told June.

“What does he know?”

“Apparently, a lot.”

Owen provided passwords.

Accounts.

Messages.

And one unexpected claim.

The missing $3.8 million was only part of the scheme.

Meredith had been stealing from the Carter family since before Lillian died.

June frowned.

“How?”

Hayes slid a photograph across the table.

Lillian Carter.

Walking into a bank.

Beside her—

Meredith.

The photo was taken six days before Lillian changed her trust.

Owen claimed Lillian had discovered everything.

And before she died, she created a second document Meredith had never been able to find.

👉 Meredith’s obsession with June began long before Elara’s birth—because Lillian Carter had left one final secret her daughter desperately wanted destroyed.
