Chapter 2 - PLAY IT BACK

Marcus Dunn, the Carter estate’s security director, arrived five minutes later.

June refused Caleb’s hand when he tried helping her from the floor.

“Don’t touch me.”

His hand dropped.

“June, I—”

“Don’t.”

That one word silenced him.

Marcus opened the security application on the nursery tablet.

Meredith stood near the door.

“I’m leaving.”

June looked at Marcus.

“Lock the exterior gates.”

Meredith snapped:

“You can’t hold me here.”

“You can leave when the police arrive.”

Caleb looked sharply at June.

“Police?”

June touched her face again.

“You punched me.”

The truth of it finally seemed to reach him.

He looked down.

Marcus opened the recording.

12:43 p.m.

The nursery was empty except for Elara sleeping in her crib.

Then Meredith entered.

Alone.

She closed the door.

Walked to Elara.

Removed the glass jar from inside her handbag.

Caleb stopped breathing.

On screen, Meredith looked directly at the ceiling camera.

Then pulled out her phone.

She tapped something.

Waited.

And smiled.

“She thought she turned it off,” Marcus said quietly.

Meredith’s eyes widened.

Caleb turned toward her.

“You disabled the camera?”

“I didn’t.”

Marcus continued playback.

Meredith unscrewed the jar.

She leaned over Elara.

That was when June entered.

The rest happened exactly as June said.

Her shout.

The kick.

The jar breaking.

June immediately running to Elara.

Then Caleb entering.

Meredith screamed from behind him:

“She’s hurting the baby!”

And Caleb hit June.

The room went silent after the video ended.

Caleb stared at the frozen screen.

June watched his face collapse.

“June…”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

“I thought—”

“I know what you thought.”

His eyes filled with horror.

“I saw you over her.”

“You saw exactly what Meredith wanted you to see.”

Caleb looked at his sister.

Meredith had been living in the guest wing for three months.

Their younger sister.

Elara’s aunt.

The person Caleb had trusted enough to give unrestricted access to his home.

“What was in the jar?”

Meredith folded her arms.

“Nothing dangerous.”

June laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“You were holding it over my baby.”

“It was a calming solution.”

“What solution?”

Meredith did not answer.

Marcus stared at the broken glass.

“We need to keep everyone out of this room.”

Caleb looked at June.

“Elara needs a doctor.”

“She’s going.”

“I’m coming.”

June looked directly at him.

“No.”

His face fell.

“June.”

“You punched me because your sister pointed at me.”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“You made a choice.”

Police sirens sounded outside.

Meredith suddenly moved.

Not toward the door.

Toward the shattered jar.

Marcus blocked her.

“What are you doing?”

Meredith froze.

June noticed.

So did Caleb.

Detective Lauren Hayes entered minutes later.

She took one look at June’s face.

Then the broken crib.

Then the glass on the floor.

“What happened here?”

June answered without taking her eyes off Meredith.

“The camera will show you.”

Meredith’s lawyer would later call that sentence the beginning of a misunderstanding.

It wasn’t.

It was the beginning of the end.

Because forensic technicians collected the liquid from the shattered jar.

And when the laboratory results returned, nobody called it a “calming solution.”

👉 Whatever Meredith had brought into the nursery was never meant to be anywhere near a ten-month-old baby.
