Chapter 12 - The Evidence My Mother Protected

Dad's evidence was twenty years old.

And incomplete.

That's why he'd never used it publicly.

His federal team had investigated a network of developers and local officials.

Cole Development appeared in several financial records, but the case shifted toward larger targets before prosecutors established enough evidence against Edward.

Dad retired years later.

Then Cole approached Mom about her land.

Dad recognized the names.

He warned her.

Mom didn't blindly obey him.

She hired independent attorneys.

Ordered her own valuations.

Reviewed everything.

Then she refused to sell.

“She made that decision,” Dad said. “Not me.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your mother didn't want you inheriting our enemies along with our property.”

I cried then.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

I missed her.

I hated that dead people could leave love behind and still leave unanswered questions.

Dad reached across the table.

“I'm sorry.”

It was the first apology I'd heard from either man who'd kept something from me.

And it mattered.

The next morning, our attorney received the preserved cloud copy of my Easter recording.

Complete.

Richard threatening me.

Richard admitting he “handled” documents.

Richard boasting about Mercer.

Not enough to prove the entire financial conspiracy alone.

But combined with bank records, Jenna's statement and the forged authorizations, it was powerful.

Then the insurer responded.

Richard had personally requested the $20 million policy increase.

He had also asked a disturbing question during the process:

Would the policy remain valid if I died while traveling outside the state?

My hands went cold.

Dad immediately noticed.

“Don't jump beyond the evidence.”

He was right.

The question was frightening.

It wasn't proof of a murder plan.

But I no longer needed to exaggerate Richard's behavior to understand the danger.

My attorney filed for a protective order based on the documented assault and threats.

We also began divorce proceedings.

Richard responded within hours.

He accused me of attacking him at Easter.

He claimed Dad assaulted him without provocation.

Then he released a short phone video online.

It showed Dad slapping him.

Nothing before it.

No hair pulling.

No shove.

No threat.

Just the slap.

Richard had turned himself into the victim.

And people started believing him.
