Chapter 15 - The Confession Written Too Early

My attorney spotted it immediately.
The statement was dated three days earlier.
Richard stared at his father.
“You wrote this before I talked to her.”
Edward's expression didn't change.
Richard finally understood.
His father had always planned for him to become the fall guy.
The document blamed Richard for the forged transfers, insurance increase, payments to Mercer Strategic Consulting and pressure on Jenna.
Everything.
Too much.
It was almost perfect.
And that's what made it useless.
Several claims contradicted records we already possessed.
One transfer had been initiated while Richard was demonstrably overseas.
Another contained Caroline's authenticated login.
A payment to Mercer's company came directly from an Edward-controlled corporate account.
Edward had tried to simplify a conspiracy that wasn't simple.
Richard began laughing.
Not because anything was funny.
Because his loyalty had finally collapsed.
“You were going to bury me.”
Edward stepped toward him.
“You buried yourself.”
Richard looked at me.
Then Dad.
“I'll give you everything.”
Edward snapped, “Richard.”
“No.”
It was the first time I'd heard Richard say no to his father.
“I have emails. Meeting notes. The original valuation reports.”
Edward's face changed.
There.
Fear.
Richard continued.
“Dad kept two sets of books for the land projects.”
My attorney immediately told him not to touch or alter anything and to obtain independent counsel.
Richard nodded.
Then Edward made his final mistake.
He turned toward me.
“This family would still be intact if you'd simply signed.”
Silence.
Richard stared at him.
Dad stared at him.
My phone was still recording.
Edward realized it one second too late.
He walked away without another word.
The next weeks were not cinematic.
They were slow.
Subpoenas.
Forensic accounting.
Interviews.
Authentication.
Richard hired his own attorney and began cooperating.
Not because he became good.
Because the conspiracy had turned on him.
Investigators recovered emails showing Edward discussing “the Bennett solution” years before our wedding.
Caroline had prepared fraudulent documents.
Mercer's consulting company had received payments tied to specific moments when complaints or compliance concerns disappeared.
Then investigators found the missing link.
An email from Edward to Richard dated two weeks before our first date.
Three words in the subject line:
May you like
MEET LILY BENNETT.
And attached was a complete financial profile of me.
