Chapter 13 - The Video That Turned Everyone Against Us

By lunch, Dad's face was everywhere locally.
RETIRED MAN ATTACKS BUSINESSMAN AT EASTER PARTY.
Richard never mentioned grabbing my hair.
Never mentioned shoving me.
His family's spokesperson called Dad “unstable.”
Mercer issued a statement saying he had witnessed “an unprovoked escalation.”
That lie hurt more than I expected.
He had been there.
He knew.
Comments flooded my social media.
Gold digger.
Manipulative wife.
Crazy family.
I shut the phone off.
Richard called my attorney with an offer.
Drop the divorce allegations.
Withdraw accusations involving Mercer.
He would “encourage everyone to move forward.”
My attorney almost laughed.
I didn't.
Richard wasn't trying to win a public argument.
He was trying to pressure me before investigators finished tracing the money.
So we didn't release everything.
That was Dad's advice.
“Don't fight a legal case through Facebook.”
Instead, my attorney released one unedited forty-second segment.
Richard's hand in my hair.
The yank.
The shove.
His threat.
Then his shove against Dad.
Then Dad's slap.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing narrated.
Public reaction changed within hours.
But the important reaction happened privately.
Mercer called Richard seventeen times that afternoon.
We knew because investigators had obtained preservation orders for relevant records.
Then Mercer called Edward.
Then Caroline.
The family was panicking.
Finally, someone made a mistake.
Caroline emailed a trust employee:
Destroy the Bennett drafts. Dad says they're obsolete.
The employee didn't destroy them.
She forwarded the message to her compliance department.
That single sentence linked Caroline directly to the disputed paperwork.
Richard came to Dad's house that night despite the temporary no-contact conditions requested by my lawyer.
He stayed outside the property line.
“Lily!”
Dad moved toward the window.
I stopped him.
I walked onto the porch with my phone recording.
Richard stood beside his car.
His face looked exhausted.
“Come home.”
“No.”
“My father is destroying everything.”
That surprised me.
“What?”
“He's blaming me.”
For the first time, Richard wasn't threatening me.
He was afraid.
Then he said:
“You think I started this?”
May you like
He shook his head.
“I was twenty-nine when my father told me to meet you.”
