Chapter 1 - Get Out“You’re a crippled burden. Get out.”

Mark Monroe’s hand crushed Rachel’s injured shoulder as he forced her down onto the rain-soaked driveway.

Her black cane slipped across the pavement.

Rachel caught herself with one palm, but her damaged left leg folded beneath her. Pain shot from her ankle to the old surgical scars along her hip.

Behind her, Mark kicked open the torn Army duffel bag.

Wet uniforms, medals, photographs, and folded commendations spilled into the muddy water.

One framed photograph landed face down.

Another showed Rachel in uniform beside her late father, Colonel Thomas Monroe.

Mark stepped on it.

Rachel’s ten-year-old daughter screamed from the doorway.

“Mom!”

Sophie ran forward in her pajamas and raincoat, but Vivian seized the girl’s arm and dragged her beneath the porch roof.

Vivian remained perfectly dry in her beige silk cardigan.

She watched Rachel struggle in the rain with cold satisfaction.

Rachel reached for her cane.

Mark pressed harder against her shoulder and forced her toward the mud.

Rachel’s face tightened, but she refused to beg.

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Cowards only feel strong above the wounded.”

Mark’s jaw clenched.

“You think that uniform still makes you important?”

Sophie fought against Vivian’s grip.

“Let me go!”

Rachel’s expression changed instantly.

The pain disappeared behind disciplined fury.

“Take your hands off my daughter.”

Vivian released Sophie only after Mark glanced back.

Then Mark grabbed Rachel’s decorated uniform jacket and threw it farther into the rain.

A silver medal struck the pavement beside Rachel’s hand.

She closed her muddy fingers around it.

Headlights swept across the driveway.

An elderly man in a worn raincoat entered through the gate carrying a sealed envelope wrapped in clear plastic.

Mark turned angrily.

“Who the hell are you?”

Walt Danner ignored him.

He walked directly to Rachel and placed the envelope into her hand.

“Your father saved this for the night they left you with nothing.”

Through the plastic, Rachel could see a brass key and a legal seal.

Vivian’s smile vanished.

Mark’s face tightened.

Rachel slowly rose beside Sophie, using her cane for support.

Then she looked toward the house.

“Then tonight, they lose everything.”

👉 Mark thought he was throwing Rachel off his property—but the key inside the envelope belonged to a house he had never legally owned.
