Chapter 9 - The BlackoutThe power failed at 11:43 p.m.

Rachel was reading beside Sophie’s bed when every light went dark.

She heard the security system die.

Then the back gate opened.

Rachel’s breathing slowed.

She did not panic.

She moved Sophie into the reinforced interior bathroom, handed her a phone, and gave one instruction.

“Call 911. Stay behind the locked door until you hear my voice and the code word.”

Rachel took her cane and moved through the dark hallway.

Rain began tapping against the windows.

The sound pulled her back toward the night in the driveway.

But this time, she was not injured and unaware.

She was prepared.

A shadow crossed the kitchen.

Rachel struck the light switch out of habit.

Nothing happened.

The figure moved toward the study where the trust records had been stored.

Rachel spoke from the hallway.

“The documents aren’t there.”

The intruder froze.

It was not Mark.

It was Calvin Reese, the private investigator.

He had violated his cooperation agreement.

Mark offered him money to destroy the remaining evidence.

Calvin lunged toward Rachel.

She shifted her weight onto her stronger leg and used the cane to block his path.

He grabbed it.

Rachel released the handle instead of fighting his strength.

Calvin stumbled backward with the sudden loss of resistance.

Rachel activated the emergency alarm on her watch.

Sirens sounded outside.

Calvin ran toward the rear door and collided with Walt, who had returned from the guesthouse carrying a heavy flashlight.

Police entered moments later.

Calvin was arrested.

His phone contained messages from Mark.

BURN THE NOTEBOOK. FIND THE ORIGINAL DEED.

Mark had ordered evidence destruction while on bond.

His release was revoked.

This time, the judge denied further bail.

Sophie came out only after Rachel gave the code word.

She ran into her mother’s arms.

“You were scared,” Sophie whispered.

“Yes.”

“But you knew what to do.”

Rachel held her tightly.

“That’s what courage usually is.”

The attempted break-in strengthened the criminal case.

It also revealed Mark’s desperation.

He believed the original deed was the only proof the house belonged to Rachel.

He did not know the trust had been recorded with the county years earlier.

Destroying the paper would change nothing.

Rachel realized Mark still thought power came from controlling objects.

Documents.

Money.

Medication.

Keys.

But the real power had already shifted.
