Rachel had not slept.
She sat at Walt’s kitchen table with Sophie beside her and answered every question calmly.
She provided her prescriptions, surgical records, Army medical evaluations, and the names of her doctors.
The investigator requested a drug test.
Rachel agreed immediately.
Mark had claimed she abused opioid pain medication.
The test showed none in her system.
Rachel had stopped taking prescription painkillers seven months earlier.
The investigator asked why multiple pharmacy records showed recent refills.
Rachel frowned.
“I didn’t request them.”
The pharmacy confirmed someone had collected medication using a copy of Rachel’s military identification.
Security footage showed Vivian at the counter.
Vivian had filled Rachel’s prescriptions and removed the pills.
Mark then photographed the labeled bottles inside Rachel’s bedroom to make it appear she was taking them.
When police searched Vivian’s belongings, they found three unopened prescription containers.
The child-welfare case shifted direction.
Instead of investigating Rachel, authorities began examining Mark and Vivian for medical identity theft and manufacturing false evidence.
Sophie finally spoke.
“Grandma put bottles in Mom’s drawer.”
Every adult in the room turned toward her.
Rachel knelt carefully.
“You saw her?”
Sophie nodded.
“Last week. She told me not to tell you because you would get confused.”
Rachel closed her eyes for one second.
Vivian had tried to make a child doubt her own mother.
The investigator asked Sophie whether Mark had ever frightened her.
Sophie looked at Rachel before answering.
“He said if Mom didn’t leave, he’d send her somewhere people lock the doors.”
Rachel’s stomach tightened.
Mark had repeated the same threat her father recorded years earlier.
The investigator documented everything.
By afternoon, Rachel received temporary sole custody and a protective order.
Mark was prohibited from contacting Sophie.
Vivian was included in the order.
Rachel should have felt relief.
Instead, Sophie asked a question Rachel could not answer.
“Mom, did Dad ever love us?”
Rachel pulled her daughter close.
“He may have believed he did.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No,” Rachel said softly. “It isn’t.”
Then Walt arrived with news from the hospital.
Colonel Monroe’s death certificate had been reviewed.
A nurse had reported an argument in his room the night before his fatal stroke.
