The jury convicted Mark on assault, fraud, attempted custodial interference, identity theft, stalking, conspiracy, and witness tampering.
Vivian was convicted of fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, and child-endangerment offenses.
Mark received a lengthy prison sentence.
Vivian received a shorter sentence due to her age, but the judge rejected home confinement.
At sentencing, Mark looked toward Rachel.
“I gave you twelve years.”
Rachel answered only when invited by the judge.
“He took twelve years.”
She did not ask for revenge.
She asked for legal protection for Sophie, restitution for the stolen funds, and permanent restrictions against unauthorized contact.
The judge granted all three.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Rachel.
One asked whether she felt victorious.
Rachel looked at Sophie holding Walt’s hand.
“No.”
The reporter seemed surprised.
Rachel continued.
“Victory would have been never needing this trial.”
She stepped away without another word.
The criminal case was over.
