Chapter 1 - The Report on the Island

“She’s not my child.”

Tyler Lawson slammed the DNA report onto the marble island so hard that a wineglass tipped over.

Red wine spread across the white stone like a stain.

Before Captain Harper Lawson could process his words, Carol grabbed the cream blanket wrapped around one-year-old Ava.

“Give her to me,” Carol snapped. “Tyler shouldn’t have to look at another man’s baby.”

Ava screamed.

Harper twisted sideways, locking her daughter against her chest and placing her own body between the baby and Carol.

The sudden pull jerked the blanket loose at one corner.

Harper caught Carol’s wrist.

She peeled the older woman’s fingers away one by one.

“Touch her again,” Harper said quietly. “See what happens.”

The relatives seated in the living room stared at the floor.

No one defended her.

Tyler grabbed Harper’s upper arm.

His fingers pressed directly into the dark bruise already hidden beneath her sleeve.

Pain shot through her shoulder.

She did not step back.

“Get out of my house,” he hissed.

Headlights swept across the kitchen walls.

The front door opened.

Lieutenant General Marcus Hale stepped inside and saw everything at once—the crying baby, the torn blanket, Tyler’s hand gripping Harper, and the report on the island.

His expression turned to ice.

“Remove your hand from my officer.”

Tyler released her.

General Hale lifted the report and examined it.

Then he looked directly at Tyler.

“This isn’t proof,” he said. “It’s bait.”

👉 Tyler had expected the paper to destroy Harper—but General Hale had noticed the one detail Tyler never thought anyone would check.
