Chapter 15 - The Real Test

The court ordered an accredited DNA test.

Samples were collected from Tyler, Harper, and Ava in front of verified witnesses.

Every seal was documented.

Every signature was authenticated.

Tyler tried to delay the appointment.

The judge refused.

When the results arrived, Harper read them alone in Daniel Mercer’s office.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998 percent.

Tyler was Ava’s biological father.

Harper had always known.

But seeing the truth on legitimate paper still made her cry.

Not from relief.

From grief.

Ava would one day learn that her father had denied her publicly, not because he doubted her, but because he wanted a house.

At the hearing, Tyler stared at the report.

His attorney whispered to him.

Tyler did not apologize.

He said the fake result had been Carol’s idea.

Carol gasped from the back row.

“You asked me to do it.”

Their alliance broke instantly.

Carol described Tyler’s affair.

Tyler described Carol’s plan to gain control of Ava.

Each tried to save themselves by exposing the other.

The judge listened in visible disgust.

Harper remained silent until asked whether she intended to keep Tyler from his daughter forever.

“No,” she said. “But biology does not make someone safe.”

Tyler finally looked at her.

“You can’t take my child.”

Harper’s voice stayed calm.

“You tried to throw her away before you tried to claim her.”

👉 The judge’s temporary order protected Ava—but Harper still had to decide what justice should look like after the criminal investigation ended.
