Chapter 10 - Eleanor Tried to Become the Victim
Eleanor knew the investigation was closing in.
So she moved first.
She filed for a protective order against Michael.
Claimed he had assaulted her at the baby shower.
Claimed Claire was emotionally unstable.
Claimed Rebecca had kidnapped Lucy years earlier.
Then she requested emergency control over Bennett company voting rights, arguing Michael was compromised.
Michael almost exploded.
Hannah stopped him.
“This is what she wants.”
Claire understood.
“If he loses his temper, she uses it.”
Exactly.
So they did something Eleanor never expected.
Nothing publicly.
No angry interviews.
No social-media war.
They documented.
Preserved.
Filed.
The baby shower had been recorded by two security cameras.
The footage showed Eleanor pulling Claire’s chair away.
Kicking toward her abdomen.
Dumping trash on her.
It also showed Michael entering afterward.
His slap was captured too.
His attorney did not hide it.
Michael acknowledged it.
He said he reacted physically after witnessing an immediate threat to his pregnant wife.
The court would evaluate that conduct separately.
Claire respected that.
They weren’t rewriting reality to make themselves perfect.
Then the rest of the footage played.
“She always does this whenever you leave us home alone!”
Michael’s face hardened on screen.
Then Eleanor’s voice:
“You said the exact same thing about the first baby!”
The judge looked up.
Eleanor’s attorney shifted uncomfortably.
Hannah introduced the Saint Agnes records.
Not to decide the entire case that day.
Only to establish why Claire had reasonable fear of Eleanor.
The judge granted temporary restrictions preventing Eleanor from contacting Claire, Lucy, or Rebecca.
Eleanor stared at Claire across the courtroom.
Pure hatred.
Outside, she approached reporters.
“My daughter-in-law is manipulating my son.”
Claire kept walking.
Eleanor shouted:
“She’s after our company!”
Claire stopped.
Michael whispered:
“Don’t.”
Claire turned anyway.
She didn’t shout.
“My daughter was three years old before I learned she was alive.”
Reporters went silent.
Eleanor’s face changed.
Claire continued:
“I’m not discussing anything else until the legal process is complete.”
Then she walked away.
That single sentence destroyed Eleanor’s attempt to frame this as a rich-family disagreement.
People began asking a different question.
How could a mother not know her child survived?
Investigators asked it too.
Medical regulators reopened Dr. Reed’s case.
The state reviewed Saint Agnes records.
Thomas Vane surrendered documents.
Rebecca testified.
Rachel testified.
Then forensic accountants discovered something Eleanor had not anticipated.
The Bennett succession trust wasn’t the only money involved.
After Lucy’s birth, Eleanor had transferred $3.8 million from a restricted family account into entities she controlled.
The justification depended on Lucy not legally existing as Michael’s child.
Claire stared at the report.
“So she profited directly.”
Hannah nodded.
“And that is much easier to prove than motive.”
Michael’s expression turned cold.
His mother had spent years saying everything was for family.
Now the money trail showed exactly who benefited.
Then an accountant discovered a payment made the week Claire entered Saint Agnes.
