Chapter 7 - Claire’s Signature Was Real

The forensic document examiner delivered bad news first.
Claire’s signatures on the placement forms were genuine.
Michael looked stunned.
“But she was sedated.”
“That matters,” Hannah said. “A genuine signature does not automatically equal informed consent.”
They compared timestamps.
Claire had received lorazepam and opioid pain medication before several forms were signed.
Nursing notes described her as confused.
Crying.
Repeatedly asking whether her baby was dead.
Claire read that sentence three times.
“Someone had already told me she died.”
Hannah nodded.
“That changes context substantially.”
Then they found the nurse.
Carolyn Price.
Retired.
Living in Arizona.
Carolyn agreed to a video interview.
The moment Claire appeared on screen, Carolyn began crying.
“I wondered if you’d ever find out.”
Claire went still.
“You remember me?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Carolyn explained that Claire arrived bleeding but medically stable.
The fetus still had a heartbeat.
Eleanor repeatedly insisted Claire did not want the pregnancy.
Carolyn found that strange.
“Because you kept asking me to save your baby.”
Claire broke down.
Michael held her hand.
Carolyn continued.
Dr. Reed transferred Claire to Saint Agnes under another identification number.
Eleanor remained with her.
Claire was heavily medicated.
“She kept telling you the baby was gone.”
Claire whispered:
“While I was still pregnant?”
“Yes.”
The room fell silent.
Carolyn had objected.
She documented concerns.
Those notes disappeared from Claire’s primary chart.
But Carolyn kept a personal incident log because the situation frightened her.
She still had it.
Hannah nearly smiled.
“That could be important.”
Then Carolyn dropped another revelation.
“You delivered awake.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“At Saint Agnes.”
“No.”
“You were awake.”
Claire shook her head violently.
“I would remember.”
Carolyn’s eyes filled.
“You were sedated again afterward.”
Claire began breathing faster.
Fragments came back.
Bright light.
Someone telling her not to push.
A baby crying.
Eleanor saying:
Don’t look.
Claire covered her face.
Michael looked shattered.
“She heard Lucy.”
Carolyn nodded.
“You asked to hold her.”
“What happened?”
“Eleanor said the baby had severe abnormalities and wouldn’t survive.”
Claire sobbed.
Lucy had survived.
Healthy enough to leave neonatal care nineteen days later.
Eleanor had lied while Claire’s daughter cried in the same room.
Carolyn’s incident log also identified a lawyer present during the signing.
Thomas Vane.
Hannah knew the name.
“He still practices.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Then we talk to him.”
Thomas Vane initially refused.
Then Hannah sent him Carolyn’s preserved notes.
He called back within fifteen minutes.
“I want counsel present.”
Hannah agreed.
Before hanging up, Vane said something unexpected.
“Eleanor didn’t create the original plan.”
Claire stared at the phone.
“What?”
Vane paused.
“She inherited it.”
Claire felt cold.
May you like
“Inherited it from whom?”
Vane would only answer in person.
