Chapter 8 - The Plan Began Before Claire
Thomas Vane arrived with his attorney.
He looked terrified.
Hannah placed the guardianship documents in front of him.
“Who instructed you?”
Vane hesitated.
“David Bennett.”
Michael stood so quickly his chair moved backward.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Claire felt sick.
The letter had blamed David for cowardice.
Was that another lie?
Vane continued quickly.
“Not to steal the child.”
Michael sat slowly.
David had consulted Vane months before Claire’s first pregnancy.
He worried Eleanor would attempt to interfere with any child Michael had with Claire.
Why?
Because Eleanor had already tried something similar once.
Michael frowned.
“With who?”
Vane looked at him.
“You.”
Silence.
Michael laughed once.
“What?”
When Michael was born, Eleanor’s marriage to David was unstable.
David’s mother distrusted Eleanor.
The Bennett trust required biological descendants for certain inheritance rights.
Eleanor had secretly altered portions of Michael’s newborn records to strengthen her position in an inheritance dispute.
David discovered it years later.
He buried the scandal to preserve the marriage.
Claire stared at Michael.
“So your father knew she manipulated records before.”
“Yes,” Vane said.
“He asked me to prepare safeguards for any future grandchildren.”
“Then why did you help Eleanor?”
Vane looked ashamed.
“Because after David backed down, she learned I knew.”
She threatened his practice.
His reputation.
His family.
When Claire became pregnant, Eleanor demanded he prepare placement documents.
Vane complied.
Hannah’s expression hardened.
“You participated in fraud.”
“Yes.”
“Why confess now?”
“Because she assaulted a pregnant woman and chained a child.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“So your conscience appeared when the story became public?”
Vane looked down.
“Too late.”
At least he knew.
He surrendered emails.
Drafts.
And the original metadata.
Those records proved Eleanor directed the transfer.
They also proved she ordered Claire’s medical notes altered.
Michael asked:
“Did Dad know Lucy survived?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“About nine months after she was born.”
Michael’s face tightened.
“Why didn’t he tell us?”
“He tried to remove Eleanor from the company first. He thought that would weaken her enough to return Lucy safely.”
“Instead he waited.”
Vane nodded.
“And then he became ill.”
Claire felt anger at David too.
Not the same as Eleanor.
But real.
Everyone had decided Claire couldn’t handle the truth.
Everyone had taken her choice.
Then Vane produced one email from Eleanor.
Subject:
Second Pregnancy.
Dated six weeks ago.
Claire stared at it.
Her current pregnancy.
Michael opened the message.
Eleanor wrote:
If Claire delivers another qualifying child, the remaining succession protections activate. We cannot allow history to repeat.
Michael went pale.
Claire’s hand moved instinctively over her stomach.
The baby shower attack had not been random rage.
Eleanor had been panicking about the second child too.
And she had been discussing Claire’s pregnancy with someone else.
The recipient address belonged to a Bennett company executive.
