Chapter 1 - The Form She Tore in Half
“Stop performing and sign it.”
Cheryl Monroe yanked the official folder with both hands.
Major Rachel Monroe refused to release it.
Monitor wires stretched across her pale chest as she pulled the documents back, her bare feet slipping on water from an overturned cup.
The cardiac monitor screamed.
Rachel’s knees buckled.
Captain Laura Kim caught her around the waist before she struck the floor.
“Rachel, breathe.”
Loose papers tore from the folder and scattered across the bright military hospital room.
Thomas Monroe rushed forward.
Not to catch his daughter.
To grab the documents.
Rachel saw his hand reaching for them.
Something inside her hardened.
She forced herself upright against Laura’s shoulder and tore the medical-access request cleanly in half.
“I died waiting for you.”
Thomas froze.
His weathered face tightened, but guilt quickly turned to anger.
“You survived,” he said. “What more do you want?”
Cheryl stepped between them.
She pointed toward the surgical scar visible above Rachel’s blue hospital gown as though the wound were an inconvenience.
Rachel’s hand shook as she raised another form.
The revoked emergency-contact authorization.
Her eyes filled, but her voice became brutally calm.
“A father who came before the funeral.”
Cheryl lunged again.
Laura blocked her arm and planted herself between Rachel and the family.
The hospital administrator opened the door.
Two military police officers entered behind him.
Every face in the room changed.
Thomas noticed the broken phone on the bedside table.
Then the family photograph lying facedown beside it.
His anger collapsed into panic.
Rachel stood supported but upright beside the bed.
She pressed the final signed form against her chest.
The officers quietly blocked Thomas and Cheryl from coming closer.
Rachel looked directly at her father.
“You lost access before you lost me.”
The monitor slowly steadied behind her.
Then the administrator opened the folder he had been carrying.
Inside was a second document bearing Thomas’s signature.
He stared at it.
