Chapter 5 - The Signature Laura Stopped
Rachel regained partial consciousness the morning after surgery.
Pain surrounded her.
Every breath pulled against the incision across her chest.
Tubes and monitor wires restricted her movement.
Laura stood beside the bed.
“You made it,” she said softly.
Rachel tried to smile.
“My father?”
Laura did not answer immediately.
Rachel understood.
“He never came.”
“No.”
“Did he call?”
“Yes.”
That somehow hurt worse.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Minutes later, Cheryl entered.
She carried flowers in one hand and the black folder in the other.
“Oh, good,” she said. “You’re awake.”
Rachel’s speech was weak.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping.”
Cheryl placed the flowers near the window without water.
Then she opened the folder.
“Your father and I need temporary authority while you recover.”
Rachel stared at the page.
The letters moved in and out of focus.
“I don’t understand.”
“It only lets us handle bills.”
Laura stepped closer.
“She is under heavy medication.”
Cheryl ignored her.
“Rachel, sign here.”
Rachel’s hand barely moved.
Cheryl placed a pen between her fingers.
Laura removed it immediately.
“She cannot legally consent in this condition.”
Cheryl’s face hardened.
“You are a nurse.”
“I am also the officer assigned to protect her medical interests.”
“This is family business.”
“It became hospital business when you brought documents to an incapacitated patient.”
Cheryl leaned toward Rachel.
“If you don’t sign, your father could lose everything.”
Rachel looked at her.
“Lose what?”
Cheryl realized her mistake.
“Nothing.”
“What did he buy?”
Cheryl closed the folder.
“You’re confused.”
Rachel’s heart rate increased.
The monitor alarm changed.
Laura called for the physician and ordered Cheryl out.
Cheryl refused.
Security arrived.
As she was escorted away, she shouted toward Rachel.
“We’re doing this because you’re incapable of thinking clearly.”
Rachel lay beneath the harsh hospital lights, unable to sit up.
But her mind had become painfully clear.
She asked Laura to place every financial account under temporary protection.
She revoked Thomas as emergency contact.
She removed Cheryl from all medical-access permissions.
And she requested a military legal-assistance officer.
Laura asked whether Rachel was certain.
Rachel looked toward the empty doorway.
