Chapter 2 - The Call Thomas Ignored

Rachel’s heart failed on a Tuesday morning.

She had just finished briefing a medical-readiness team at Fort Campbell when pain ripped through her chest.

At first, she thought it was exhaustion.

She had slept four hours in two days.

Her unit was preparing for an overseas rotation, and Rachel had spent the week correcting supply failures that could have endangered soldiers.

Then her vision narrowed.

She gripped the edge of the conference table.

“Major?”

Laura Kim was beside her before anyone else moved.

Rachel tried to speak.

No sound came.

Her knees hit the floor.

The last thing she remembered was Laura shouting for a crash cart.

Rachel woke briefly inside an ambulance.

A medic asked for her emergency contact.

“Thomas Monroe,” she whispered.

“My father.”

Laura called him.

No answer.

She called again.

Then a third time.

At the hospital, doctors discovered a severe cardiac defect Rachel had carried unknowingly since birth.

A weakened artery had begun tearing.

She required immediate surgery.

The surgeon needed consent for several emergency decisions in case Rachel lost consciousness.

Rachel signed what she could.

Then the pain became unbearable.

“Call my father,” she said again.

Laura held her hand.

“I’m trying.”

Thomas finally answered on the seventh call.

Music played in the background.

He was at Cheryl’s charity luncheon in Nashville.

Laura identified herself and explained that Rachel was being prepared for emergency heart surgery.

Thomas sounded irritated.

“Is she awake?”

“Barely.”

“Then she can make her own decisions.”

“She may lose consciousness.”

Cheryl’s voice came faintly through the phone.

“Thomas, the auction is starting.”

Laura tried again.

“Sir, your daughter may not survive.”

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Rachel exaggerates when she wants attention.”

Laura stared at the phone.

“She is being taken into surgery.”

A pause followed.

Then Thomas said, “Call me when you know something definite.”

The line went dead.

Rachel was still conscious enough to hear.

She turned her face toward the wall.

Laura never forgot her expression.

Not shock.

Recognition.
