Cheryl denied forging the directive.
Then investigators found the original file on her laptop.
The document had been created two weeks before Rachel’s surgery.

Cheryl had been preparing for incapacity long before Rachel collapsed.

One message from Cheryl to the project lender read:
Rachel’s condition is becoming relevant. If she is medically unable to object, Thomas can act for her.
Rachel read the email from her hospital bed.
“What condition?”
Cheryl avoided her eyes.
Rachel had experienced shortness of breath and dizziness for months.
She mentioned the symptoms once during a family dinner.
Cheryl urged her not to see a military doctor.
She said a diagnosis could damage Rachel’s career.
At the time, Rachel thought it was rare concern.

Thomas sat through the questioning in stunned silence.
He had agreed to the retreat scheme.
He had helped access Rachel’s accounts.

But Cheryl had built a plan extending beyond the loan.
If Rachel lost capacity permanently, Cheryl intended to place Thomas in control of her finances.
Then the retreat would receive the guarantee.
The mortgage on Rachel’s house could be refinanced.
Her disability payments could cover debt.
If Rachel died, the altered insurance beneficiary would repay investors.
Rachel felt physically ill.
Laura noticed the monitor climbing and ordered everyone to stop.
Rachel refused.
“No. Finish it.”
The investigator opened one final email.
It was addressed to Thomas.
After the policy changes, we will be protected no matter what happens to her.
Thomas shook his head.
“I never saw that.”
The email showed it had been opened from his phone.
“I didn’t understand what she meant.”
Cheryl turned on him.
“You understood enough to give me her passwords.”
Rachel looked at her father.
There it was.
Not innocence.
Complicity with limits.
He had helped Cheryl enter Rachel’s life because he expected money.
He only became horrified when he realized Cheryl had prepared to profit from death.
“You gave her my passwords?”
Thomas’s voice cracked.
“She said it was for the loan.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
Laura squeezed her hand.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Rachel, I made a mistake.”
