Chapter 5 - What Happened When Dad Left
Maisie could not give investigators an adult timeline.
She was five.
She described memories.
The blue cup.
The upstairs closet.
The locked bedroom.
Being told not to cry.
Sloane saying Graham would stop loving her if she caused problems before the wedding.
A child specialist interviewed her carefully.
No leading questions.
No pressure.
The pattern emerged slowly.
Whenever Graham traveled, Sloane became harsher.
Meals were withheld as punishment.
Maisie was isolated in her bedroom.
Her stuffed rabbit was taken away.
She was repeatedly told she was ruining Graham’s new family.
The chain was the most extreme escalation.
Maisie said Sloane had first used it several days earlier.
Not to drag her.
To frighten her.
She told Maisie it was what “bad children” wore when they needed to learn.
Graham walked outside the interview room and became sick.
His daughter had been trying to tell him something.
He remembered calls when Maisie begged him to come home.
Sloane always explained them away.
Separation anxiety.
Jealousy.
A child manipulating her father.
Graham had trusted the adult.
He hated that.
Then his former nanny called.
Elena Morris had worked for the Grants until two months earlier.
Sloane told Graham Elena resigned because she wanted more money.
Elena said she had been fired.
Why?
Because she found Maisie locked alone in a dark dressing room.
Elena threatened to tell Graham.
Sloane accused her of stealing jewelry.
She warned Elena that the Grant family’s attorneys could destroy her career.
Elena left frightened.
But she kept evidence.

Photographs.
And one voice memo recorded accidentally during an argument.
Sloane could be heard telling Elena that Maisie needed to learn Graham had “a new priority now.”
Elena had emailed Graham after leaving.
He never received it.
His security team checked.
The message reached his household email system.
Then it was automatically deleted by an administrative filter.
Sloane had access to that account.
Graham suddenly remembered how many household communications she had taken over before the wedding.
Schedules.
Staff.
School pickups.
Travel.
She had not merely inserted herself into his life.
She had controlled who could reach him.
