Chapter 9 - The Mother Maisie Lost
Graham finally returned to the question he had avoided.
Why Maisie?
Money explained part of it.
Control explained another.
But Sloane’s messages contained something more personal.
Jealousy.
Maisie looked like Claire.
Same light hair.
Same gray-blue eyes.
Same habit of tilting her head when confused.
Graham still kept Claire’s photographs in Maisie’s bedroom.
He spoke about her openly.
He wanted Maisie to know her mother had loved her.
Sloane hated it.
At first she hid that resentment.
Then came the wedding planning.
She asked Graham to remove Claire’s photograph from the family hallway before guests arrived.
He refused.
Sloane complained to Owen that she was tired of “competing with a dead woman and her little copy.”
That phrase appeared again and again.
Maisie became a symbol of everything Sloane could not erase.
Claire’s memory.
Claire’s trust.
Graham’s first family.
A bond that existed before Sloane and would continue after the wedding.
The more Sloane tried to become central, the more Maisie’s presence reminded her that love was not a competition she could win by removing another person.
So she began creating reasons Graham should see his daughter differently.
Difficult.
Troubled.
Manipulative.
Dangerous.
Graham remembered the conversations.
Sloane repeatedly told him he spoiled Maisie because he felt guilty about Claire’s death.
She said his daughter needed discipline.
She said therapy was failing.
She said separation might help.
He challenged some statements.
Believed others.
That knowledge hurt.
Then Claire’s former sister, Olivia, arrived at the mansion.
She had something Graham had never seen.
Three months earlier, Maisie had drawn a picture at Olivia’s house.
A little girl.
A woman in a white dress.
A black line around the girl.
Olivia asked what it meant.
Maisie refused to answer.
Olivia assumed it was a necklace.
Now she understood.
The restraint had been introduced before the wedding day.
Olivia also had text messages from Sloane.
Sloane had been trying to reduce Maisie’s visits with Claire’s family.
She claimed the visits made the child emotionally unstable.
Graham never authorized that.
Once again, Sloane had been speaking for him.
Then Olivia revealed something bigger.
Claire’s trust had a protection Graham had forgotten.
If anyone intentionally interfered with Maisie’s relationship with Claire’s family for financial reasons, an independent guardian review could be triggered.
