Chapter 6 - The Signature File
Police searched Sloane’s laptop.
They found a folder named “Wedding Vendors.”
Inside were legitimate contracts.
Flowers.
Photography.
Catering.
Transportation.
Buried among them was another directory.
It contained scans of Graham’s signature.
Dozens of them.
Checks.
Legal forms.
Business letters.
Passport applications.
Sloane had practiced reproducing it.
Forensic analysts found draft versions of the Maisie placement authorization.
Early copies looked terrible.
Later ones became convincing.
She had even studied where Graham placed pressure when writing his last name.
The final forged signature fooled Stonebridge.
It did not fool the independent trust bank.
That was why the $140,000 payment had not yet cleared.
The co-trustee requested verbal confirmation from Graham.
A call was scheduled for Monday.
Sloane needed Maisie inside the facility before then.
Once the child was already placed, she planned to describe the situation as an emergency and pressure Graham not to reverse it.
Her messages with Owen revealed the psychological strategy.
Let Graham enjoy the honeymoon first.
Tell him Maisie is finally calm.
Convince him the separation is helping.
Then gradually extend the stay.
Thirty days.
Sixty.
Ninety.
Sloane believed physical distance would weaken Graham’s resistance.
Owen was less comfortable.
Several messages showed him warning his sister not to fake medical documents.
Sloane ignored him.
But Owen still submitted them.
Still arranged transportation.
Still expected his fee.
He was not innocent.
Then investigators found an email Sloane had drafted but never sent.
It was addressed to Graham.
The subject line read:
“Maisie had another episode.”
The body described a violent outburst supposedly occurring at the wedding.
According to the draft, Maisie attacked Sloane, destroyed decorations, and became uncontrollable.
None of it happened.
Sloane had written the email the previous night.
Before the wedding.
Before the chain.
Before the foyer confrontation.
She had planned the story before creating the event.
The packed luggage was part of it.
Maisie would be transported immediately.
By the time Graham understood what happened, his daughter would be several states away.
But there was another attachment.
A photograph of bruising on Sloane’s arm.
The metadata showed the image had been taken two days earlier.
Police asked what caused it.
Sloane claimed Maisie did.
