Martha’s defense team requested negotiations after the online messages were authenticated and corroborated.
The prosecution did not offer an easy escape.
But trial carried uncertainty for everyone.
Leo might eventually be required to participate in limited ways depending on evidentiary rulings.
Richard desperately wanted to protect him from that.
A plea agreement was negotiated.
Martha admitted intentionally fabricating Leo’s fracture, applying the unnecessary cast, placing materials inside in a manner that contributed to skin injury, knowingly leaving the cast in place as his condition worsened, and administering medication without appropriate medical justification.
She admitted wanting hospitalization.
She admitted medical attention made her feel necessary.
She did not admit intending Leo to die.
The evidence did not support that.
The plea reflected serious child abuse and endangerment offenses consistent with applicable law, along with related conduct.
The judge did not accept it automatically.
He questioned Martha extensively.
“Did you understand your conduct could cause serious physical harm?”
“Yes.”
“Did you continue?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Martha looked toward the floor.
“Because when he was sick, I knew what my place was.”
That sentence appeared in local news.
I hated seeing it reduced to a headline.
The full truth was more complicated.
Martha had grief.
Psychological pathology.
A need for attention.
Control.
Fear of abandonment.
