Chapter 10

PART 10:
On his son’s first birthday, Ethan sat beside her grave with the baby on a blanket between his knees.
The little boy grabbed at the grass and laughed at nothing.
Ethan smiled through tears.
“You sound like her,” he whispered.
The wind moved softly through the cemetery.
For a moment, Ethan imagined telling his wife everything.
That their son was healthy.
That he had her eyes.
That Eleanor no longer had keys, power, or a place in their lives.
That Julian had confessed.
That the truth she hid in her hand had done exactly what she needed it to do.
Then his son crawled toward him and slapped one tiny hand against his boot.
Ethan picked him up.
“You ready to go home?” he asked.
The baby babbled.
Ethan looked once more at the name on the stone.
“I’ll bring him back,” he promised. “Always.”
Then he stood with his son in his arms.
He was still grieving.
He always would be.
But grief was not the only thing left.
There was truth.
There was justice.
There was a child who would grow up knowing his mother had fought for him until her final breath.
And there was Ethan, no longer the son Eleanor could command, no longer the brother Julian could betray, but the father his wife had trusted him to become.
He walked away from the grave with his son held close.
Behind him, the sun broke through the clouds.

And for the first time since the day he came home to a coffin, Ethan let himself believe that love could survive even the cruelest lie.
💬 What was the most heartbreaking moment — Ethan finding the memory card in his wife’s hand, or realizing his mother had delayed help while his wife begged for an ambulance?
