Chapter 6

PART 6:
When they finally called, they lied.
They told dispatch she had refused help.
They told paramedics she had been confused.
They told the hospital she had a history of panic.
But Ethan’s wife was still conscious when they wheeled her out.
Weak.
Sweating.
Terrified.
She reached toward the nursery as the stretcher passed the door.
Julian thought she wanted the baby bag.
She did not.
She wanted the memory card.
Somehow, while Eleanor argued with the paramedics, she slipped it from behind the baseboard and curled it into her palm.
At the hospital, she gave birth to Ethan’s son.
A small, furious baby boy with strong lungs.
She saw him for less than one minute.
Then something went wrong.
A complication the doctors might have controlled sooner if they had known the full truth.
If they had known how long she had been in distress.
If they had known someone had delayed the call.
If they had known she had been grabbed, blocked, and pressured instead of helped.
Before surgery, she asked a nurse for Ethan.
The nurse said they were trying to reach him through military channels.
His wife nodded.
Then she closed her fist around the memory card and whispered, “Give this to him.”
But Eleanor was in the hallway.
Listening.
The nurse was pulled into an emergency before she could take it.
By morning, Ethan’s wife was gone.
Eleanor took control instantly.
She told the hospital the family wanted privacy.
She told relatives the birth had been tragic but natural.
She told Julian to collect the baby.
Then she planned the funeral before Ethan even landed.
But the nurse remembered.
She remembered the wife’s whisper.
Give this to him.
She also remembered Eleanor refusing to leave the hallway.
So she called the number listed on Ethan’s emergency military contact file.
That call reached a family readiness officer.
The family readiness officer reached Ethan’s command.

And Ethan’s command contacted an investigator because forged military documents had already been flagged in Ethan’s file the week before.
👉 By the time Ethan came home to a coffin, the truth was already moving toward the house…
