Chapter 7

PART 7:

Julian had made one mistake.

He had tried to use Ethan’s forged signature through a military benefits office.

That brought the wrong people to his door.

By the time Ethan’s plane touched down, the investigator was already reviewing the forged documents with local police.

But Ethan did not know that yet.

All he knew was that his wife was in a coffin.

His son was hidden upstairs.

And his mother had told him not to make a scene.

Now, standing in the living room with the memory card in his hand, Ethan heard his baby cry again.

He moved toward the stairs.

Eleanor stepped in front of him.

“The baby is sleeping.”

Ethan looked at her.

“He is crying.”

“He doesn’t need all this chaos.”

“He needs his father.”

Julian tried to move toward the side hallway.

The investigator pointed at him.

“Stay where you are.”

One officer went upstairs with Ethan.

The nursery door was closed.

Inside, a hired night nurse stood near the crib, nervous and pale.

She had been told Ethan was “too unstable” to see the baby yet.

When Ethan reached into the crib, his hands shook.

His son was tiny.

Red-faced.

Alive.

Ethan lifted him carefully, and the baby quieted against his chest like he recognized the heartbeat he had only heard through his mother’s body.

Ethan broke completely.

He sank into the rocking chair with his son in his arms and cried without caring who heard.

Downstairs, the memory card was loaded into the investigator’s laptop.

The first file was audio.

Eleanor’s voice filled the room.

Sign it. If something happens, Ethan will listen to me, not you.

Then Julian.

You think a baby makes you permanent? You’re nothing without him.

Then his wife.

Call an ambulance.

Then Eleanor again.

Not until you sign.

Ethan stood in the nursery doorway, listening from the stairs with his son held against him.

May you like

His face went empty.

👉 But when the hallway footage played next, every person in that house finally saw what happened before the ambulance came…
