Chapter 8

PART 8:

The investigator played the hallway footage next.

The room watched Julian block the door.

Watched Eleanor hold the folder.

Watched Ethan’s wife double over in pain.

Watched six minutes pass before anyone called for help.

No one spoke.

Not relatives.

Not the funeral director.

Not even Eleanor.

Julian whispered, “That doesn’t prove murder.”

The investigator looked at him.

“No. But it proves coercion, false imprisonment, failure to render aid, document fraud, and obstruction. The medical examiner will decide the rest.”

Eleanor’s mask cracked.

“She was stealing my son from me.”

Ethan came down the stairs slowly.

The baby slept against his shoulder.

His eyes locked on his mother.

“My wife was giving birth to my son.”

Eleanor’s mouth trembled.

“I was protecting this family.”

“No,” Ethan said. “You were trying to own it.”

The police arrested Julian first.

He shouted that Eleanor made him do it.

Then Eleanor turned on him, saying he forged the documents.

They blamed each other before they were even out the door.

That was the last gift they gave Ethan’s wife.

Proof that neither of them had ever loved anything more than themselves.

The funeral stopped.

Not canceled.

Stopped.

Ethan would not let his wife be buried under a lie.

Two weeks later, after the investigation confirmed the timeline, he held a new service.

A quiet one.

No Eleanor.

No Julian.

No fake speeches about family.

Just the people who had truly loved her.

Her coworkers from the hospital came.

The nurse who made the call came too.

She cried when Ethan hugged her.

“You helped bring the truth home,” he told her.

The nurse shook her head.

“She did that. She held on to it until the end.”

At the service, Ethan stood beside the coffin with his son in his arms.

He did not speak like a soldier.

He spoke like a husband.

“She was not weak,” he said. “She was not alone. She was not a footnote in my family’s story. She was my wife. She was his mother. And she saved him even when no one saved her fast enough.”

People cried openly.

Ethan looked down at his son.

May you like

“One day, I’ll tell him that his mother’s last act was courage.”

👉 But even after the truth came out, Ethan still had to face the court case that proved how cruel the plan had been…
