Chapter 16 - ELISE’S PRICE

Elise Ward took gifts.
The handbag.
A resort weekend.
Restaurant bills.
Total documented value under twelve thousand dollars.
Small compared with the trust losses.
Enough to compromise judgment.
She denied taking cash.
Aaron found none.
“What did Vanessa ask you to do?” Claire’s investigator asked.
“Move things faster.”
“Did you know Lily wasn’t receiving the services?”
“At first, no.”
“When did you know?”
Elise looked down.
“After the fourth invoice.”
“How?”
“The descriptions repeated.”
“Then why keep approving?”
“Vanessa said Daniel needed privacy.”
“Did you speak to Daniel?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“She said he didn’t want direct contact.”
Elise had the same excuse as everyone.
Vanessa told me you wanted it.
Then came the deeper admission.
Elise asked Vanessa for a written trustee confirmation.
The confirmation arrived.
My signature.
My letterhead.
Fake.
Elise suspected it.
She approved anyway.
“Because of a handbag?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Elise started crying.
Vanessa knew she had altered compliance notes in an unrelated account two years earlier to hide a mistake.
Not theft.
A reporting failure that could have ended her career.
Vanessa found out through Gavin, who represented a client at Westbridge.
She used it.
Blackmail again.
People around Vanessa were not bought.
They were compromised.
Gifts softened them.
Secrets trapped them.
This was the same structure she used with Marcus and Melissa, except Elise had crossed farther.
The reward was clear.
Westbridge’s co-approval did not legitimize the payments.
A compromised employee bypassed controls.
Then Elise revealed the final planned transfer.
“I was supposed to approve it Friday.”
“The $950,000?”
“Yes.”
“Would you?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Claire’s investigator did not let her hide.
“Had you prepared the approval?”
“Yes.”
That was the truthful answer.
The transfer was one click away.
Elise’s saved draft contained an attachment from Vanessa.
A residential placement letter supposedly signed by me.
It stated I consented to send Lily to Utah for intensive treatment.
My forged signature.
Again.
But this time the language included something new.
Temporary medical guardianship delegated to Vanessa Carter during placement.
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
“Medical guardianship?”
The facility required a parent or legal guardian to handle admissions.
I had never delegated anything.
If processed, the document would make Vanessa appear authorized to make health decisions for Lily.
Not full legal custody.
Not permanent guardianship.
But enough to create practical control during a supposed treatment placement.
That was what “accelerate” meant.
Move Lily into a program.
Create a record of severe behavioral problems.
Put Vanessa in charge of medical decisions.
Take the final trust payment.
File for divorce.
Then accuse me publicly.
The plan was more aggressive than we understood.
Still, one piece did not fit.
The Utah facility was real.
Would they admit a four-year-old on fake papers?
Claire contacted them.
The answer was no.
They had rejected the referral.
Their minimum age was twelve.
The invoice was fake from the beginning.
There was never going to be a placement.
Only a paper trail and money transfer.
Vanessa never intended to send Lily anywhere.
She intended to make it look like treatment existed.

The $950,000 was pure extraction.
📖 Elise revealed the supposed Utah “placement” was built on forged guardianship papers, only for the real facility to confirm it never accepted Lily at all. 👇
