Margaret’s birth name was Clara Bennett.
She had been the first woman trained for the Carter wife role.
She survived it by taking control.
Instead of destroying the system, she inherited it.
She changed her name to Margaret and created new Claras beneath her.
The abused became the architect.
Her history explained the obsession.
It did not excuse generations of harm.
At trial, Margaret said:
“I made them strong.”
Clara answered:
“You made us afraid.”
The jury believed the records.
Margaret was convicted on racketeering, identity crimes, unlawful confinement, medical fraud, and conspiracy.
The Carter trust entered independent receivership.
The mansion became a survivor center.
The lower kitchen was preserved as evidence.
Clara and I rebuilt our marriage legally under our chosen names.
Not immediately.
Not ceremonially.
