Chapter 3 - THE NAME THEY GAVE HER

Emily Shaw had entered a private identity program at age twelve after her parents died in a house fire.

Margaret’s foundation placed her in a boarding school and renamed her Clara.

She was trained in etiquette, household management, and public presentation.

Not educated for freedom.

Prepared for placement.

At twenty-seven, she was introduced to me.

Our love was real.

The introduction was not.

Margaret believed Emily would be easier to control than Claire Dawson.

Claire had the bloodline.

Emily had the temperament.

Together, they created the ideal wife on paper and in public.

Sienna knew.

She had supervised Emily’s transition into the Carter house.

The dishwashing was not the beginning of her cruelty.

It was maintenance.

Humiliation to keep Emily uncertain and dependent.

Then the camera archive revealed months of footage.

Sienna taking Clara’s phone.

Margaret instructing staff to ignore her.

Relatives mocking her accent.

Clara crying alone at the sink.

One file was labeled:

SERVANT CONDITIONING — PHASE THREE.

I turned toward Sienna.

“What was phase one?”

She did not answer.

Claire did.

“Isolation.”
