Chapter 16 - THE BACKPACK

Marcus claimed he threw Leo’s backpack into a dumpster.

Investigators did not believe him.

Neither did I.

Why preserve a child’s backpack through a kidnapping and then casually throw it away?

The hangar footage showed him carrying it carefully.

Not by one strap.

Against his chest.

There was something inside he wanted.

Leo watched the footage only after his therapist and investigators agreed it would not harm him.

He immediately pointed.

“My blue notebook.”

“What notebook?” Ruiz asked.

“My school one.”

Leo used it for sketches, passwords he wasn’t supposed to write down, and little lists of things he wanted to remember.

“Was your tablet password in it?”

He nodded.

There it was.

Marcus had taken the backpack because he wanted access to the tablet if they found it.

But they never did.

That meant the notebook could still matter.

Corporate waste records showed no pickup from Marcus’s hangar until two days after Leo was rescued.

Investigators searched the disposal chain but found nothing useful.

Then Leo gave us the first proactive idea that belonged entirely to him.

“My backpack has a tracker.”

I stared.

“What?”

He shrugged.

“You put one in it when we went to Disney.”

I had forgotten.

A tiny Bluetooth tracker sewn into an inner pocket after he once lost the backpack in an airport.

The tracker’s cloud history retained its last known locations.

Airfield.

Marcus’s home.

Then a commercial storage complex.

The signal ended there.

Detective Ruiz obtained the proper process.

A storage unit leased by Marcus’s brother contained the backpack.

Inside was Leo’s blue notebook.

His spare glasses.

A sweater.

And a small digital recorder that did not belong to him.

Marcus’s.

The recorder contained meetings going back nearly two years.

He had recorded Elena repeatedly.

Insurance.

Leverage.

Blackmail material.

That was the new direction.

We were no longer depending on Marcus to explain himself honestly.

His own paranoia had documented the partnership.

One recording captured Elena asking about my father’s ledger.

Another captured Marcus telling her the reserve could be “borrowed” if they restored it before annual audit.

Elena laughed.

“Borrowed?”

Marcus answered:

“Call it whatever lets you sleep.”

She said:

“I sleep fine.”

Months later, the tone changed.

Elena:

“You promised this would be covered.”

Marcus:

“The sale collapsed.”

Elena:

“Then use another account.”

Marcus:

“There is no another account.”

Elena:

“Leo’s allocation?”

Marcus:

“No.”

A pause.

Then:

“That would trigger independent notice.”

The recorder proved Elena knew Leo’s protected reserve specifically.

She asked about using it.

Marcus initially refused because it was easier to detect.

Later records showed money tied to the same reserve moved anyway.

That was a major financial link.

Then the final recording in the device changed the danger.

It was from four days before Leo disappeared.

Marcus said:

“If this blows up, David will come after both of us.”

Elena replied:

“No. David will come after you.”

Marcus:

“What makes you so sure?”

Her answer:

“Because when I’m done, he won’t trust himself enough to come after anyone.”

She wasn’t only planning to hide evidence.

She was planning to break my credibility.

📖 Leo’s forgotten backpack led us to Marcus’s secret recordings, and those recordings proved Elena intended to damage not only my company but my confidence as a father. 👇
