Chapter 7 - THE PLAN BEFORE LEO

The floor plan had been printed six weeks earlier.
Not after Leo recorded Elena.
Before.
That changed everything again.
Elena and Marcus had not designed the hidden passage specifically for my son.
They had already been interested in it.
Why?
The answer came from renovation records.
My father had used the underfloor corridor to access a concealed document room behind the fireplace wall.
During remodeling, I approved sealing most of the passage because the space was obsolete.
I did not know one locked compartment remained.
Marcus did.
He had requested archived property plans from company facilities six weeks earlier.
His stated reason:
Insurance valuation.
There was no insurance review.
Someone had been searching for something beneath my house before Leo became involved.
I stood with Detective Ruiz in the pantry while a forensic team examined the hidden stairwell.
Leo remained upstairs with a child specialist and Maya.
The air below smelled of dust, old wood, and metal.
Past the section where Leo had been found, investigators discovered a second door.
Exactly what he warned me about.
It had been locked.
Behind it was a narrow storage room.
Empty shelving.
A broken desk.
A wall safe.
The safe stood open.
Nothing inside.
Dust patterns showed that something rectangular had recently been removed.
A box or ledger binder.
I thought of the recording.
Where is the original?
With the person who should have burned it.
Marcus and Elena had searched my house for the original reserve ledger.
Leo’s recording made him a threat only after he overheard them.
The underfloor room had been their first target.
Investigators found one partial fingerprint on the safe.
Marcus.
Another belonged to Elena.
No ambiguity now.
Both had been inside.
Then I made a mistake.
I confronted Elena by phone.
I should have let investigators keep building quietly.
I was too angry.
“You were under my house.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“So were you.”
“Marcus’s prints are on the safe.”
Another silence.
“You don’t know what Dad kept down there.”
“Tell me.”
“He kept secrets.”
“What secret are you afraid I’ll find?”
Her voice hardened.
“You think this is about my loans?”
“I think you locked my son under a floor.”
“I did not.”
“Leo remembers you.”
“He’s traumatized.”
I nearly crushed the phone in my hand.
“Don’t you use what happened to him to discredit him.”
“David, you’re not thinking clearly.”
The same tactic Marcus had used.
Stress.
Confusion.
Control.
Then she said something that stopped me.
“You should ask why Dad hid the ledger from you.”
“What ledger?”
“Exactly.”
She disconnected.
Within two hours, Marcus failed to report to work.
His company phone shut off.
The server logs showed he had accessed archived trust files minutes after my call to Elena.
My confrontation had warned them.
I had given anger priority over strategy.
