Chapter 9 - THE FATHER THEY NEEDED ME TO BECOME

Elena needed me angry.

That realization came too late to prevent the first damage.

The morning after Marcus disappeared, a video appeared online.

It showed me outside my villa shouting into my phone.

Only twelve seconds.

No context.

My words:

“You were under my house… I swear to God, Elena…”

Then the clip ended.

A headline called me unstable.

Another claimed family members had “raised concerns about David Vance’s behavior before his son vanished.”

I knew who had leaked it.

Elena.

But knowing wasn’t enough.

She had created the image her custodial petition required.

Angry father.

Missing child.

Financial pressure.

Family conflict.

Then she added a second attack.

Her attorney released a statement saying Elena had “serious concerns about both children’s emotional safety.”

I laughed when I first heard it.

Then Detective Ruiz didn’t.

“She’s building a record.”

“You believe her?”

“That isn’t what I said.”

Ruiz explained the problem.

I had smashed floorboards with a fireplace poker.

Understandable under the circumstances.

Still violent conduct captured by Elena’s phone.

I had threatened her verbally during our call.

Again understandable.

Still usable when edited.

I had controlled much of my children’s schedule since their mother Claire died eleven months earlier.

True.

Grief had made me more protective.

More rigid.

Elena knew that better than anyone.

She had helped with the children after Claire’s death.

She knew which parts of me could be reframed as dangerous.

The emotional cost hit harder than the financial investigation.

A child welfare investigator requested an interview.

Not because anyone believed I had abducted Leo.

Because competing allegations involving children had now entered formal channels.

I wanted to refuse.

My lawyer told me not to.

So I cooperated.

No influence.

No calls to donors.

No family pressure.

Leo spoke privately with a child specialist.

I hated being excluded.

But I let it happen.

That was the choice Elena did not expect from me.

She expected control.

Instead, I gave the process room.

The investigator later confirmed there was no basis for emergency removal of Leo or Maya.

Relief almost knocked me down.

But the case remained open while facts were reviewed.

A cost.

Real.

Then Elena’s first major lie cracked.

She claimed she had not been at the villa during the period Leo was placed beneath the floor.

Traffic records, smart-home logs, and her own tea purchase proved she entered three times.

The last entry occurred seventeen minutes before I found Maya listening to the floor.

She had returned to check something.

Or someone.

Detective Ruiz obtained footage from a nearby café.

Elena sat there with Marcus earlier that afternoon.

No audio.

But Marcus slid a key across the table.

Elena pocketed it.

Investigators compared it with the hidden passage lock.

Same rare key profile.

The lock manufacturer had sold only three replacement keys locally.

One order went to Marcus Dane.

Elena had the key.

And now the story she needed—that I was the dangerous parent—was beginning to collapse under facts she could not edit.

📖 Elena tried to weaponize my anger and grief against me, but her key exchange with Marcus gave investigators a physical link to the locked passage beneath my children. 👇
